Francia Raisa, the actress who donated a kidney to Selena Gomez, has spoken openly about being diagnosed with both ADHD and long-term PTSD.
Last week on TikTok, Francia shared that she was diagnosed with ADHD and chronic PTSD three months ago. She’s been in intensive therapy ever since, working through old patterns and focusing on healing.
She shared a heartfelt update about her recovery, explaining that dancing has become a key part of her healing process. She wrote that something which once caused her great pain is now helping her rediscover who she is.
Okay, so she finally talked about it, and it broke my heart. She said back in 2008, something happened in the dance world – a really bad breakup, apparently – and it totally ruined something she loved. It turned it into something that *hurt* her, you know? Then, fast forward to 2022, her body just started falling apart. She was going to doctor after doctor, trying to figure out what was wrong, changing everything about how she lived… but nothing helped! She kept saying she just didn’t *feel* like herself, and it was clearly something way deeper than just a physical problem. It’s like all that old pain finally caught up with her, and I’m just so glad she’s finally opening up about it.
I found out three months ago that I have ADHD and long-term PTSD. Since then, I’ve been working through a lot in therapy – figuring things out, letting go of old patterns, and starting to feel better.
Francia shared the post just days after denying rumors of a disagreement with Selena, and mentioned Selena’s recent wedding to Benny Blanco – an event Francia apparently didn’t go to.

The 37-year-old recently said in an interview that stories about a disagreement with Selena were simply untrue.
During the interview, which seemed to be recorded at a bookstore event, she offered Selena her best wishes for the upcoming wedding, speaking in Spanish.
She shared that she knows her friend is getting married and is genuinely happy for her. She also expressed gratitude for having helped her achieve a successful life, noting that her friend is now a billionaire.
Francia explained that when considering organ donation, people should focus on the fact that it’s about giving someone the chance to live, not about forming a personal connection with the recipient.
‘Look, from the beginning the doctors told me, it’s a donation,’ she explained.
People generally don’t question how their small donations are used when they give to charity. If you donate a dollar to St. Jude or any other organization, you usually trust they’ll put it to good use without needing to ask for details.
She described donating a kidney to Selena as a rewarding experience. ‘I’m just thankful to be alive and to know I helped save someone’s life,’ she said.
Raisa mentioned that it might be harder for women to donate organs than for men, but she didn’t explain why this difference might exist.

The actress from ‘How I Met Your Father’ strongly denied reports that she had a disagreement with Selena Gomez about Gomez’s health after her kidney transplant.
She dismissed the question as media speculation and rumors, stating, ‘I’ve never made any such statement.’
She said she didn’t know about the rumors that she’d gotten upset with Selena Gomez over smoking until they surfaced. She added that she wasn’t aware of them at the time.
She said that neither of them understood what was happening, and they weren’t discussing it. She hoped they might talk about it someday.
In 2017, Francia donated a kidney to Selena after Selena was diagnosed with lupus.
People with this condition have overactive immune systems that mistakenly attack their own healthy tissues and organs.

During a 2018 interview, Francia revealed that both she and Selena experienced depression after Selena’s kidney transplant. The surgery was nearly fatal for Selena when an artery unexpectedly ruptured during the procedure.
Francia recalled the warning that a social worker gave her before the surgery.
She remembered being told that the transplant would be difficult, but the person receiving the organ would likely recover much quicker than the donor. This is because they’re gaining something essential, while the donor is losing something they don’t need. She also recalled being told it would be a tough process.
‘And it was hard,’ Francia continued, adding, ‘Selena and I both went through a depression.’
Francia lifted her shirt and pulled down her pants, showing a scar that looked like it came from a C-section, along with other, smaller scars on her abdomen.

Okay, so I was doing some research – you know, just *really* getting to know everything about Selena – and I found out about this… it’s kinda heartbreaking, honestly. She has a scar on her inner thigh from the emergency surgery they had to do when an artery ruptured. It’s just… wow. It makes you realize how serious things were for her, and it just makes me admire her strength even more.
During the interview, Francia revealed that Selena Gomez personally told her she was a suitable kidney donor, not the doctors. This caused some fans to speculate that Francia might have felt pressured into making the donation.
In 2022, rumors surfaced of a disagreement between the two after Selena revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that Taylor Swift was her sole friend within the entertainment industry, making her feel like an outsider.
‘Interesting,’ Francia wrote in a since-deleted comment on a post about the quotation.
In response to Francia’s comment, Selena replied, ‘Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.’
But the following year, the two tried to tamp down any talk of a feud.
Selena Gomez shared in her Apple TV+ documentary that she’ll always be deeply grateful to Francia Raisa. She was incredibly moved that Francia didn’t hesitate at all to offer to be her kidney donor.
The same year, Francia emphasized that she was not ‘forced’ into donating her kidney.

She explained on the Good Guys podcast that the gesture came from a place of sincere kindness, and she’s felt incredibly fortunate ever since.
Francia revealed in December 2023 that she and Gomez hadn’t been as close lately, but she assured everyone they were still on good terms.
It had been six years since we’d really talked, and honestly, we hadn’t said a word to each other for the whole last year. But thankfully, we patched things up around the time I turned 35, which was such a relief. She told USA Today all about it.
We’ve always gotten along well, really. There wasn’t any major conflict – if you asked either of us, we’d be hard-pressed to say what caused us to drift apart. But taking some time to ourselves was probably what we both needed. Now that we’re back in each other’s lives, we’re both in a better place.
She shared with E! News in 2024 that she and Selena sometimes went weeks or even months without speaking, even though they remained friends.

She described her friendship with Selena as one of those rare connections where time doesn’t matter. Even if they don’t speak for a year, it feels like no time has passed when they reconnect. That’s how close they are, she explained.
Francia mentioned that while she was good friends with Gomez, she didn’t have the same connection with Gomez’s other friends.
Francia went unmentioned among the notable guests at Selena’s wedding to Blanco.
People spotted a video on her Instagram showing her dancing with a choreographer around the time of her wedding, leading them to believe she wasn’t actually at the wedding location.
