Adam Peaty has shared the touching story of how he asked Gordon and Tana Ramsay for their blessing before proposing to their daughter, Holly.
The Olympic swimmer, now 30, proposed to the 25-year-old influencer last September after dating for three years. They plan to get married this Christmas, with close friends and family in attendance, including the influencer’s father, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who is 58.
Although many people might feel nervous asking the famously hot-tempered chef for his daughter’s hand in marriage, Adam shared that when he asked for Tana’s blessing to marry Holly, all three of them ended up crying together.
On Thursday’s episode of the Live, Laugh, Luke podcast, host Luke Hamnett asked Adam how he felt about meeting the famously outspoken restaurateur for the first time.
The three-time Olympic champion gave a complex answer when asked about fame, saying it’s strange because famous people are still just human, and we often have preconceived ideas about them.
I was only nervous because I really cared about Holly and wanted her family to like me.
I’m a pretty traditional person, so before marrying Holly, I asked her parents, Gordon and Tana, for their blessing. It was a really emotional moment – we were in Cornwall, and I asked if we could have some private time together. We all ended up crying and hugging, and now, here we are, married!
Adam explained the proposal process was quite disorganized, as many of his initial plans didn’t go as expected.
He had planned to propose at a cozy restaurant during their vacation in Greece, but mistakenly booked the wrong place. He ended up having to think on his feet and improvise a proposal anyway.
He remembered thinking he’d do it later, but then he spotted a beautiful castle and became curious about what was happening inside.
I’m not kidding, the place was a disaster. There were two wrecked cars, three dead cats, and chickens wandering everywhere. I immediately knew I couldn’t work there.
I realized I needed to come up with a plan, but then I remembered it was getting late and figured things would start to calm down. However, I was in the Mediterranean, and that meant the opposite – everyone actually starts going out around 10pm!
We returned to the hotel and enjoyed our beautiful villa, which had a private pool. I put on some classical music and then got down on one knee.
Adam confessed he had been crying and predicted the wedding day would be just as emotional, stating he fully expects to cry throughout the entire event.
He announced the wedding would be in Bath and described it as a large event, with Gordon in charge of the catering.
He also mentioned the couple requested no phones at the event, explaining, ‘It’s important to be present, enjoy the day, and spend quality time together.’
Adam and Holly first got to know each other in 2021 when Adam was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and Holly’s sister, Tilly, was also involved in the show.
Okay, so let me tell you about Adam and Holly’s whirlwind romance! They started dating back in May of last year, and it wasn’t long before they were openly showing their affection for each other – about a month later, actually. And you know you’re serious about someone when you get a tattoo, right? Well, by December, they’d both gotten matching tributes – Adam with a ‘H’ on his chest, and Holly with an ‘A’ subtly placed behind her ear. It was a sweet way to show their commitment!
Okay, so I totally knew it! Adam just told Luke everything – apparently, he was double-tapping *all* of her Instagram pics! I mean, all of us fans were already buzzing, thinking something was going on, and it turns out we were right! He basically admitted he was throwing out major hints, hoping she’d notice. It’s so cute how it all started!
He contacted Holly to apologize for all the rumors, but she surprised him by saying she wouldn’t mind if he actually asked her out. He thought it was exactly the opening he needed!
He continued, explaining that after being away for a while, he returned and wasn’t ready for a relationship. He decided to concentrate on his career instead.
She suddenly asked me out, so we went for a walk, relaxed, and grabbed coffee. It felt right, and she moved in with me just two weeks later – we connected instantly.
Last April, Adam described his connection with Holly, saying they immediately clicked. He shared that she brings him a sense of peace, calm, and perspective, which helps create stability in his life.
When working towards my goals in swimming, I always remind myself that life extends beyond the sport. No matter the outcome in the pool, I consider myself successful because I have a strong and supportive partner.
Last year, Adam spoke about how much Gordon helped him through a very difficult period. He said the chef pulled him out of a low point after three years of struggles that led him to stop racing. Adam explained that Gordon supported his recovery from alcoholism and depression, as well as helping him cope with his breakup from his ex-girlfriend, Eirianedd Munro, with whom he shares a five-year-old son, George. He described these three years as incredibly challenging.
Okay, so I was reading an interview with Adam in The Sunday Times from April 2024, and he was just *gushing* about Gordon! Apparently, Gordon’s become this huge mentor figure for him, someone he really looks up to. Adam said he’s inspired by how Gordon never gives up and how he’s worked so incredibly hard to get to the very top of his field. Honestly, it’s amazing to see how much respect Adam has for him – it’s so sweet!
He described their new relationship, saying this person brings a wonderful energy and offers valuable guidance.
Gordon is a highly successful professional. He’s climbed to the top of his field and thrives in a straightforward, honest work environment.
I learn a great deal from his dedication and consistently professional approach. He always strives for excellence.
When I see others handling things so easily, I wonder why I can’t do the same. I wish I didn’t get so caught up in my feelings and could approach things with that level of detachment every day.
He explained that seeing how Gordon performed his work motivated him to adjust his own technique and mindset when swimming.
Holly recently shared with the Daily Mail that she’s getting married soon, saying everyone is excited and the wedding is just around the corner.
There’s a certain charm to winter weddings that feels distinctly English. While I enjoy summer, winter is actually my favorite season.
I’m hoping for that warm, joyful feeling of Christmas – everyone connecting, celebrating, and simply enjoying themselves.
She’s chosen her wedding dress, and she says she took inspiration from Princess Kate when making her decision.
She playfully adjusted her dress and shared, “I’m really excited, but I’m not going to reveal if it’s a traditional style or not – I want to keep some things a surprise!”
She also mentioned being a longtime admirer of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, particularly its lace and classic style, which heavily influenced her own design.
