Victoria Beckham insists she did come from humble roots and reveals how parents remortgaged the family home to support her as she shares unseen childhood pics

Victoria Beckham recently shared how growing up with limited means instilled in her a strong work ethic, reinforcing her statements about her working-class background.

In a new Netflix documentary, fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham looked back on her childhood, growing up in Hertfordshire with her parents, Tony and Jackie Adams, and her siblings, Christian and Louise.

Victoria’s parents are featured in the Netflix film, where they lovingly discuss their strong connection with their famous daughter and how their shared work ethic helped build their close family bond.

The celebrity, worth £500million with her husband David, shared that her father, who used to sell electrical supplies, built his business from the ground up.

My dad would have my siblings and me assemble things – little projects like plugs and electrical items. Then, we’d all pile into his van to deliver whatever we’d made. He was a very hard worker and expected us to match his dedication.

Before becoming a Spice Girl, she was passionate about dance, but she revealed in a documentary that it didn’t come easily to her. Her dad strongly encouraged her to work hard and improve, especially after she got into theatre school – which he helped fund by remortgaging their house.

Tony and Jackie gave Netflix a tour of the garden at their family home, which Tony fixed up when Victoria was growing up.

In a particularly touching scene from her documentary, Victoria shared how, although she got her strong work ethic from her father, she realized she would never truly thrive at dance school.

She recalled that she often felt different from other girls, and that’s when people began to criticize how she looked and her weight.

I recall the theatre school principal telling us that at the end of the performance, they would have us enter from the back. It was a subtle way of saying we didn’t look as good as some of the other performers.

I vividly remember calling my mom, completely upset and begging to come home. She immediately said I should, and that they’d even buy me new shoes. But then my dad would get on the phone and insist I stick it out and keep working hard.

Her comments about her family’s humble beginnings follow a similar discussion that arose two years ago in David Beckham’s 2023 Netflix documentary, where he jokingly questioned his wife’s assertion that she came from a ‘very working-class’ background.

In the documentary, a surprised David questioned Victoria, asking her to tell the truth. She insisted she was being honest. He then kept pressing her to remember what kind of car her father drove her to school in.

Finally, the Spice Girl agreed, revealing, ‘My dad owned a Rolls-Royce in the 1980s.’ David simply said ‘Thank you,’ then left and shut the door, having gotten the information he needed.

The documentary includes previously unseen photos and personal home videos. Victoria shared that she didn’t fully embrace her identity and appearance until she was 19 and joined The Spice Girls, following a challenging experience in school.

She coped with bullying at school by taking dance and theatre classes on the weekends. She explained that these activities allowed her to escape and become someone different, which she really enjoyed.

I was pretty isolated at school. I was bullied and didn’t really enjoy being around people, so I never felt like I belonged. But when I was performing on stage, I could transform into someone else, and that was amazing.

‘I didn’t really wanna be me, I didn’t like me. I desperately wanted to be liked.’

Victoria’s dedication to her career has proven incredibly successful. Recent reports show she earned over £1.7 million from her music last year, even though she hasn’t released any new songs in quite some time.

The 51-year-old fashion designer still earns a significant income from her past work with the Spice Girls and her brief time as a solo artist.

The girl group released their first album, Spice, on vinyl in October. They also featured their song “Never Give Up on the Good Times” in a Christmas advertisement.

Victoria’s company, Moody Productions Ltd., reported a balance of £338,174 at the close of 2024.

Victoria’s fashion brand has recently started to succeed, after losing over £66 million since its launch in 2008.

After 15 years, the celebrity finally became profitable at the end of 2023. This turnaround was boosted by surprisingly popular items like an £890 handbag and £30 eyeliner, along with a smart social media plan. She gained millions of views on TikTok by posting makeup tutorial videos.

Victoria Beckham is streaming on Netflix now.
