It’s common for major comic book storylines to begin with a character’s death, setting the stage for a large conflict. The recent DC K.O. event from DC Comics follows this pattern, but the death of a Justice League member was unexpected, particularly because it was caused by The Joker.
DC K.O., created by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Javi Fernandez, features a massive, universe-spanning fighting tournament. The Justice League learns that Darkseid has returned and is moving backwards through time, eliminating anyone who could oppose him. He’s also gaining strength from a twisted alternate Earth powered by the same Omega Energy that gives him his abilities.
The Justice League’s only hope against Darkseid was to harness the Omega Energy themselves. But this energy demanded a strong, dominating willpower – the kind born from conquering and controlling others – and couldn’t be split between multiple people. So, the heroes of the DC Universe decided to compete to determine who was strong enough to wield the power and become the new King Omega.
Who did the Joker kill to kick off DC K.O.?
Before the contest began, the Justice League tried to stop their enemies from causing trouble while they were away, hoping to keep the world safe. Unfortunately, some villains discovered what was at stake and weren’t stopped. The battle started with a shocking moment: The Joker unexpectedly killed Batman with a bazooka, taking advantage of Batman’s momentary lapse in focus.
This came as a surprise for a few key reasons. Considering how iconic Batman is, it’s hard to imagine him permanently dying, even though he’s more realistically vulnerable than most other major DC superheroes. He’s simply too popular for any death to stick.
Interestingly, many have pointed out that The Joker likely avoids truly killing Batman because their conflict is a game he enjoys. We see this illustrated in stories like ‘Going Sane,’ where the Joker temporarily stopped his villainy after thinking he’d defeated Batman. However, killing Batman in the DC K.O. comic was a powerful way to signal that anything could happen and the established patterns were broken.
