Sam Smith marked the beginning of his To Be Free New York residency with a quirky new photoshoot.

The 33-year-old singer dressed up as a pirate in a photo shoot with fashion brand Vivienne Westwood.

The musician wore a big, dark grey hat with a black tassel, along with a dark green jacket.

Sam, who prefers they/them pronouns, also wore a plaid shirt and flared trousers as part of the photoshoot.

For their third outfit, they wore a relaxed navy T-shirt featuring a green and pink design advertising their shows.

This T-shirt is being sold to raise money for The Pink House, Sam’s foundation that provides support to the LGBTQIA+ community.

During the summer, Sam released their new song To Be Free.   

The musician has been hinting at a new song on Instagram for weeks, sharing that it’s particularly meaningful to them.

I wrote this song with my friend Simon Aldred. It’s a single recording of just vocals and guitar, and we finished it off with the amazing choir we’ve been collaborating with on this new album.

‘To Be Free was written 5 years ago. It’s more than special to me.’

Fans shared heartfelt messages, including ‘Masterpiece Sam ❤️ my heart is always free’ and ‘I’m so happy you’re back with new music! I absolutely love ‘To Be Free’ and I’m excited to see what comes next. Xx’.

Brandi Carlile, a well-known songwriter, shared the song and playfully said she only wanted to hear about it, praising the singer’s voice.

In October, Sam revealed he’d be performing twelve shows at Warsaw, a small venue in Brooklyn, New York, that can hold around 1,000 fans.

The residency has since been extended to 24 shows due to fan demand.

Playing smaller, more personal shows is a completely different feeling, and I’m thrilled to be doing it in a city I love.

Filming the music video for their latest song at the same location made Sam’s time performing there even more special.
