Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill recently shared some careful thoughts about what might happen with future movies in the series, just before the new sequel comes out.
Director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill recently discussed whether a third *The Black Phone* movie might happen. Cargill admitted he wasn’t sure if audiences would even want one, saying, “Would anyone want that? I don’t know.” He then added that they hadn’t seriously considered it but hoped fans would be interested.
The sequel to the 2021 horror hit *The Black Phone*, which was originally based on a 2004 short story by Joe Hill, is coming soon. *Black Phone 2* will feature returning stars Mason Thames as Finney, the sole survivor of the serial killer known as the Grabber, Madeleine McGraw as his psychic sister Gwen, and Jeremy Davies as their father, Terrence. Surprisingly, even though the Grabber seemingly died in the first film, the character will be back, promising an even more terrifying experience in the sequel – one that many are already comparing to the *A Nightmare on Elm Street* series.
Following the success of the first film, which was a major hit in 2021, *The Black Phone* proved to be popular with both critics and audiences. It earned over $161 million worldwide on a budget of just $18 million. As of now, the film has an 81% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 272 reviews, and an 88% audience score.
Stephen King, the renowned horror author, shared his opinion on the sequel, despite his personal connection to the story through his son, Joe Hill. He simply stated: “It’s not as good as the first one… IT’S BETTER!”
What Can Fans Expect from Black Phone 2?
Director Derrickson has shared that the next film will take place in a high school setting, which he believes will naturally raise the tension and emotional impact. He explained that focusing on high school allows for more complex emotional stakes compared to the first film, which centered on middle school experiences.
Derrickson explained that to surpass the original film, they needed to increase the violence, intensity, and shock value. The sequel has significantly more gore, which contributed to its R rating – something the first movie completely lacked.
Good news for fans! Currently, critics give *Black Phone 2* an 80% rating based on 25 reviews. While this score may change after the movie’s release, it’s similar to the rating the first *Black Phone* film received in 2022.
Black Phone 2 is currently slated to arrive in theaters on Oct. 17.
