Sheridan Smith’s “mind-bending masterpiece” drama casts unexpected Taskmaster star

I’m so excited to hear Sheridan Smith is coming back to the stage! She’s amazing, and this time she’ll be in Alan Ayckbourn’s play, *Woman In Mind*. Even better, Romesh Ranganathan – you know, from *Rob & Romesh Vs…* and *Taskmaster* – is joining the cast! The show is starting in London’s West End and then heading up to Sunderland and Glasgow, which is great news for those of us outside of London.

Called a “mind-bending masterpiece” by the show’s official social media, *Woman In Mind* premiered in Scarborough in 1985 and later debuted in London in 1986.

The film features Smith as Susan, a woman who hits her head and starts fantasizing about a more fulfilling life. As her imagination takes over, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell what’s actually happening and what’s not.

Ranganathan will play Bill, Susan’s doctor, in what will be his West End play debut.

He expressed his excitement about returning to the stage in a play – something he hasn’t done since elementary school – and shared his honor at performing with the talented Sheridan Smith and the rest of the cast.

I’m feeling a powerful combination of excitement and intense nervousness about this incredible opportunity.

He expressed his excitement about performing in Alan Ayckbourn’s play, *Woman In Mind*, and helping to stage it. He also joked that playing a doctor might finally impress his mother.

Romesh Ranganathan was one of the original contestants on the first series of Taskmaster, which aired in 2015. He competed alongside Frank Skinner, Roisin Conaty, Tim Key, and the show’s winner, Josh Widdicombe.

I’m so excited for him! He’s now hosting the new The Weakest Link, which is amazing, and he’s also going to be on season two of LOL: Last One Laughing UK! The lineup is incredible – he’ll be with David Mitchell, Mel Giedroyc, Alan Carr, Amy Gledhill, Maisie Adam, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Sam Campbell, Diane Morgan, and even Bob Mortimer! It’s not out until early 2026, but I’m already counting down the days.

The popular show *Taskmaster* is currently filming its 20th season with contestants Ania Magliano, Maisie Adam, Phil Ellis, Reece Shearsmith, and Sanjeev Bhaskar.

The play *Woman In Mind* will be performed at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End from December 9th, 2025, to February 28th, 2026. Following this, it will be shown at the Sunderland Empire from March 4th to 7th, and will finish its tour at the Theatre Royal Glasgow from March 10th to 14th.

In a recent Instagram video, Smith expressed their admiration for Alan Ayckbourn, calling him a genius and explaining why his work is so popular. They were enthusiastic about a show they’re involved in, saying they wanted to start rehearsals immediately and inviting people to come and see it.

This project marks the end of a very productive year for Smith, who recently landed a role in a new film with Rebel Wilson.

The popular actress is now filming *Girl Group*, alongside Randall Park, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from *Derry Girls*, and Guz Khan of *Man Like Mobeen*.

The movie features Wilson as a pop star unexpectedly kicked off her band’s reunion tour by her fellow members – played by the iconic Melanie C, Shaznay Lewis, and Ashley Roberts.

Smith received praise for her performance as Ann Ming in the ITV drama I Fought The Law, which was very well-received when it aired over the summer.

You can watch Taskmaster on Channel 4 every Thursday at 9pm. The play Woman In Mind will start showing at the Duke of York’s Theatre on December 9th, and tickets are now on sale.
