Pregnant former stripper turned politician hits back at vicious trolls after she was inundated with vile slurs and death threats over abortion views: ‘Anti-choice losers’

Georgie Purcell has responded to hateful online harassment she’s received because of her support for abortion rights. She’s been targeted with a constant stream of abusive messages and emails.

Georgie Purcell, a Victorian state MP with the Animal Justice Party, is a strong advocate for abortion access. She has publicly shared her own experiences, including having had two abortions, and speaks openly about reproductive rights.

She’s also pregnant with her first child, and the father is Josh Burns, a Labor MP in the federal parliament.

On Wednesday, Purcell posted on Instagram to reveal some of the abusive messages she’s been getting. Many of the messages were too disturbing to share, and some even included threats against her life.

One message contained hateful and threatening language, calling the recipient a deeply offensive name and predicting their death.

One person strongly urged the individual to consider the consequences of their actions, stating that preventing a life from coming into existence was preferable to taking an innocent life. They expressed a hope that the person would never experience motherhood, believing that if they did, they would understand the gravity of their actions.

She was subjected to vile insults, including being called a ‘prostitute’ and accused of having no morals, as part of a wave of abusive comments.

Purcell posted photos of her baby bump and responded to hurtful comments in a detailed caption.

‘This week I make my way out of the second trimester, and I promised to share the parts of pregnancy that I felt comfortable,’ she began.

‘I have chosen to share much less than I thought I would –  and this might explain to you why,’ she continued.

I have a high-risk pregnancy due to my autoimmune disease, and I’m carefully managing my stress to protect my baby’s health. Unfortunately, I’ve been consistently targeted by people who oppose abortion, and their attacks have been very upsetting.

Purcell continued, explaining that she’d been receiving lots of supportive emails, messages, and comments. She’d recently passed several important tests, including a foetal echocardiogram, but has also been struggling with low blood sugar levels.

The MP shared that she’d heard from many women who had contacted her to share their personal experiences with abortion.

We have to stop demanding that women and pregnant people explain or justify their pregnancy choices or decisions about their bodies. Every person’s abortion story is valid and understandable, and that includes my own.

‘And know that I will never stop fighting for that right – for everyone.’

Purcell and Burns surprised their fans in July by sharing the news that they are going to have a baby.

Their relationship, considered a surprising match by many, became public just over a year ago and has drawn attention because the couple holds very different opinions on important topics, such as the situation in Palestine.

Burns shared the happy news that they and Purcell are expecting a baby on Instagram. They posted a cute selfie together, snuggled close and displaying their positive pregnancy test.

I’m absolutely thrilled to share some incredible news! Georgie and I are expecting a baby girl – she’s due right at the very beginning of 2026, and we couldn’t be happier!

Tia is already a wonderfully excited and loving big sister, and our new baby will grow up in a home filled with animals, love, and lots of fun.

Next year, my team and I will continue to dedicate ourselves to serving our community. At the same time, I’m committed to being a fully engaged and present father.

I’m incredibly happy and excited to start this new phase of life with my wonderful partner, Georgie, whom I love very much.

The two also showed off their sonogram image, and revealed that they are having a baby girl.

Despite both being members of left-leaning parties, Burns and Purcell have very different opinions on the Middle East, which has surprised many people.

At 37, Burns is a strong supporter of Israel and identifies as Jewish and Zionist. In contrast, 31-year-old Purcell is an activist advocating for Palestinian rights and frequently participates in related protests.

Purcell, who used to be a stripper and has many tattoos, is popular on Instagram with over 200,000 followers. She frequently uses the platform to share content about Palestine.

Despite appearing to have very different opinions, Burns stated that he and Purcell were able to agree on the matter.
