James Corden and Ruth Jones shared that they once considered a storyline for Gavin & Stacey where Gavin would have an affair, a significant departure from the show’s usual tone.

James Corden and Ruth Jones, the actors who played Smithy and Nessa, revealed they once considered a plotline where Gavin and Stacey’s relationship would fall apart due to infidelity.

James mentioned they once had a strange concept for the 2019 special, asking if others remembered it too.

‘Oh, about Gavin having an affair,’ Ruth replied, according to The Sun.

The actress explained that they chose not to pursue the affair storyline because it didn’t feel authentic to the show’s overall tone and characters.

Gavin & Stacey first aired from 2007 to 2010, and then made a comeback with special Christmas episodes in 2019 and 2024.

The final episode of the show, a special broadcast in 2024, attracted 20 million viewers. James and Ruth had initially thought about turning it into a movie.

‘We wanted to do something different from what we’d done before,’ Ruth explained.

Ultimately, they chose to release it as a TV show, believing the characters were better suited for a home viewing experience than a movie theater.

In a follow-up documentary after the show’s finale, James Corden explained the reasons why ‘Gavin & Stacey’ ended.

He said it felt like the characters were destined to end up together ever since the first Christmas special, when Dave proposed and Smithy famously told him, “Don’t marry him.”

In the final scene, he explains that the imperfections are intentional, reflecting the flawed nature of people themselves. He essentially says, “It’s messy because *we* are messy.”

James Corden and Ruth Jones are said to have agreed to a multi-million pound deal to create more episodes of Gavin & Stacey.

The new project will be moving from the BBC to AppleTV+, as a deal has been finalized to shift its streaming home.

Someone involved with the show has shared that they plan to film 10 episodes featuring a completely British cast, including James Corden and Ruth Jones.

Shooting will begin next year, with the episodes not set to land until 2027. 

The upcoming show won’t include the beloved characters from Gavin & Stacey.
