Shirley Ballas publicly shared a touching message of remembrance for a Strictly Come Dancing South Africa performer who recently passed away at the age of 46.
The 65-year-old professional dancer shared a tribute on Instagram to Michael Wentwick, a judge on the South African edition of the show.
Shirley and Michael were very close, and she considered him family. She described him as a genuinely kind and caring person.
‘His loyalty and love were unmatched, and his smile was irreplaceable,’ she wrote.
He was a frequent and welcome guest in my home, and he adored my children, always making sure they were okay. He was truly one of the most genuinely kind people I’ve ever known.
Shirley posted some photos of Michael, including one of him wearing a vibrant blue suit. She remembered suggesting the suit to him, and he playfully agreed to try it. She also credited @alanate11 for doing his hair, and said they all worked together to create a fantastic look.

Michael and Beata were incredible dancers and their win was a beautiful moment I’ll never forget. Michael, you’ve had such a positive impact on so many people, and I feel lucky to be among them.
I’m so incredibly sad to say goodbye. I’ll miss you dearly. May you rest peacefully with your beloved Beata. You’ll always be remembered with love. Sending my heartfelt condolences.
Shirley received many comments on her post, including one from Ashley Roberts of the Pussycat Dolls, who wrote, ‘Sending love and enjoying your dancing!’
Lizzie Cundy expressed her condolences, writing ‘So sorry for your loss,’ and Strictly Come Dancing’s Karen Hauer shared a broken heart emoji.
Ralf Lepehne, a friend of Michael’s, announced his passing with a heartfelt message on social media.
‘[Michael] left us far too soon and the loss is immeasurable,’ he wrote.
His death reminds us that those who shine the brightest often struggle the most, and even the strongest people can be dealing with hidden difficulties.
Beyond all his achievements and public recognition, we remember the man we cherished—a wonderful friend and colleague, a genuinely kind person who had a profound impact on our lives.

He fought a private and difficult battle with depression for many years, facing it with a quiet strength that only his closest friends and family knew about.
Though we’re deeply saddened by his loss, Michael’s joyful spirit, infectious laugh, and love of dance will always be remembered.
‘May you finally find the peace you so deserved, Michael. ❤’
