Having recently moved to England, the family is finding it hard to settle in, and they soon discover a dark presence in their new town. Rial suspects they accidentally brought a dangerous spirit – a type of night-witch called an apeth – with them from their homeland in Africa.
Remi Weekes wrote and directed this film, which is now streaming on both Netflix and BBC iPlayer – giving horror fans plenty of options to watch it this Halloween season.

Wunmi Mosaku, known for her role in *Sinners*, also stars in *His House* as Rial Majur, the wife of Bol Majur, played by Dìrísù.
The horror film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 127 critic reviews. Critics especially praised the debut work of director Weekes.
In a review, *Rolling Stone* praised *His House* as a promising first film. They noted its blend of social commentary and classic haunted-house scares, though they felt the horror elements became somewhat repetitive as the movie progressed.

Critics praised *His House* as a remarkably scary and impressive first film. *Bloody Disgusting* highlighted that it delivers on the core element of horror – genuine scares – while *Polygon* celebrated it as a fresh and terrifying take on the haunted-house story.
Vulture praised *His House* as a visually stunning and genuinely frightening film, but noted that it doesn’t fully grapple with the trauma it portrays, leaving a lasting and unsettling impact on the viewer.
Okay, so *The Observer* said this movie really gets under your skin. They said the jump scares feel real, and a big part of that is the sound – it’s super creepy. But honestly, the actors Dirisu and Mosaku were the ones who *sold* the fear for me. You could just *feel* how terrified they were, and it made everything way more intense.
His House is now streaming on BBC iPlayer.
