The 91% Rated Sci-Fi Action Hit You Forgot Was Based on a Marvel Comic Returns To Dominate Streaming

You know, I was surprised to see a real gem from 1997 popping up on the streaming charts again! It’s this awesome sci-fi action flick – and I totally forgot it was based on a Marvel comic! It came out on July 2nd and made almost $600 million back then, which is huge. Plus, it kicked off a whole franchise with three sequels, and it’s cool to see a couple of those are popular right now too.

Let’s discuss *Men in Black*, the fantastic sci-fi action movie directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Though many don’t realize it, the film is actually based on a comic book series of the same name created by Lowell Cunningham. Originally published by Aircel Comics, the series later moved to Malibu Comics before being acquired by Marvel. This means, technically, *Men in Black* could be considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in another reality. The movie definitely took some creative freedoms with the original comics, but it did so successfully, making *Men in Black* a huge box office hit.

Kay and Jay are agents of the Men in Black, a secret, well-funded government organization that handles immigration for aliens and keeps track of all alien activity on Earth. While looking into a string of unreported alien encounters, they discover a dangerous terrorist’s plan to kill two alien ambassadors who are visiting New York City.

‘Men in Black’ Is Currently Trending on Paramount+

Sony Pictures Releasing

According to Flix Patrol, *Men in Black* is currently the 5th most popular movie on the streaming service. It’s holding steady between the comedies *Stepbrothers* and *The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear*. That’s impressive for a film released nearly 30 years ago! It shows how much staying power *Men in Black* has – people still enjoy watching it today and sharing it with a new generation as a beloved sci-fi classic.

Whether or not the *Men in Black* sequels are considered good is up for discussion, but people are still watching and enjoying them years later. Currently, *Men in Black II* is popular on Paramount+, ranking at number 8 in their Top 10, and *Men in Black 3* (released in 2012) is close behind at number 9.

The 2019 film *Men in Black: International* is notably missing, and it wasn’t well-received. Critics disliked it, and fans were very divided. It currently has a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audience members giving it a 66% score. While you can’t stream it right now, it’s available to rent or buy from all digital video stores.

If you’re a fan of the original *Men in Black* movies, now’s a great time to revisit them! You can stream the first film on Paramount+ this weekend and enjoy a trip down memory lane.
