Paramount is buying The Free Press, a digital news site launched four years ago, and will appoint its co-founder, Bari Weiss, as the new editor-in-chief of CBS News, the company said on Monday.
After months of rumors, it was officially announced that Weiss, 41, is joining the company. She’ll report directly to Paramount CEO David Ellison, who actively recruited the former New York Times journalist.
Ellison announced that Bari and The Free Press are joining Paramount and CBS News, expressing excitement about bringing Bari’s strong commitment to independent journalism to the organization. He believes her leadership will energize CBS News, and this partnership reflects Paramount’s broader goal of updating how content is created and shared with audiences globally.
As a movie and media fan, I found out Paramount is acquiring The Free Press for about $150 million. It’s a relatively new company that’s been making waves with its opinion articles and podcasts – they really aren’t afraid to share a strong perspective. From what I gather, they’ve built a reputation for calling out what they see as the extremes of the progressive left and challenging what they call ‘woke’ culture. It’s an interesting move by Paramount, and I’m curious to see how this plays out.
CBS News has a long history of respected journalism and is known for shows like “60 Minutes” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” However, like many traditional TV networks, it’s been facing challenges adapting to how people now get their news through streaming and social media.
I was really surprised when I heard Weiss was heading up CBS News! As far as I know, she’s known for being a bit of a firebrand – she even quit her job at the New York Times back in 2020 because she said her coworkers were bullying her and creating a really tough work environment. Honestly, it seems like a big leap because she doesn’t have a background in TV news or managing a news organization as huge as CBS News, with all its employees.

A former New York Times editor, who also founded the Free Press media company, is entering the challenging world of television news.
Weiss’s appointment comes as former President Trump has been threatening legal action and regulatory penalties – like revoking TV licenses – against news organizations he believes are critical of him. For example, Paramount recently paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit from Trump, who falsely claimed a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris was unfairly edited to help her potential 2024 presidential campaign.
CBS News created the editor in chief position specifically for its new appointee, Weiss. Tom Cibrowski, who joined CBS News earlier this year as president, will continue in his role and report to George Cheeks, president of Paramount TV Media.
