Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer and director of *One Battle After Another*, has shared that the film’s ending was completely re-shot just before release.
This film is based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel *Vineland* and features Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary tasked with saving his daughter, Willa (played by Chase Infiniti), from a dishonest military officer.
In an interview with *Rolling Stone*, Anderson revealed that a particularly moving scene from the movie was initially quite different from what made it into the final cut.

Towards the end of the film *One Battle After Another*, Bob and Willa have a reunion while running from someone in the hills of Southern California, close to the Arizona border, according to director Anderson.
Anderson remembered they’d filmed a scene where the characters immediately hugged upon seeing each other. After reviewing the footage the next day, he realized there was more emotional depth to explore.
The director decided to film the scene again to make it more impactful, and it proved to be a good decision.
We’re really pleased with how this turned out. Creating a scenario where Willa could finally take control – where she could change things around, take the initiative, and be in a position of power – that was particularly exciting for us, he explained.
Anderson explained that the next step involves figuring out the action: who shoots whom, and how they escape afterward.
As we explored the scene and practiced, it became clear that the most impactful moment was Willa being forced to deal with the consequences of her parents’ actions. That led us to the next question – if she understands her own identity, the biggest question for Bob is: ‘Just who are you, exactly?’ And the answer to that is…
“I’m your dad,” DiCaprio chimed in.
Anderson said they “didn’t really have that in place” when they started filming.
Honestly, that’s just how it happened – through being out there doing it, practicing, playing around, and figuring things out as we went. That’s where all the cool stuff came from, as far as I’m concerned.
We had filmed a lot and gotten to know the people involved, so we felt confident that something significant would come of it. Luckily, we found what I believe is a great way to resolve everything.
The movie came out on September 26th and features Teyana Taylor as Perfidia, the ex-partner of the main character and mother of another, alongside performances by Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Regina Hall.
One Battle After Another is out in cinemas now.
