The Offer, featuring Matthew Goode and Miles Teller, is now available to stream on ITVX. The mini-series, which TV Guide called “consistently charming,” will be added to the platform on October 12th. It tells the story behind the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s famous and award-winning film, The Godfather.
Taking place in the early 1970s, The Offer tells the story of Albert S. Ruddy, the producer of the iconic film, and the many difficulties he faced while making it. The show also features a talented cast, including Miles Teller as Robert Evans, the head of production at Paramount Studios. Dan Fogler plays director Francis Ford Coppola, Justin Chambers portrays actor Marlon Brando, Burn Gorman plays Charles Bluhdorn, the businessman who bought Paramount Pictures, and Juno Temple plays Ruddy’s assistant, Bettye McCartt.
With a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Offer has garnered a mixed reception from reviewers. According to The Age, “It’s not about having a grand vision, brilliance, or exceptional skill. It’s simply about doing what’s necessary. And that’s what The Offer explores – which is why, despite its imperfections, I actually think it’s quite good.”

CNN.com praised this 10-part series revisiting 1970s Hollywood, calling it “mostly good fun.” They especially highlighted Matthew Goode’s performance as Paramount executive Robert Evans, noting he perfectly captures the flamboyant and dramatic nature of the role.
The Wall Street Journal also noted: “Fans of The Godfather – and there are many – will find this complete 10-episode drama – brought to you by the studio that nearly didn’t produce the film – both irresistible and intensely suspenseful.”
I was reading an interview with Matthew Goode in Deadline, and he talked about landing the role of Evans. He called it an “incredible opportunity,” but also admitted it was a little daunting! He said Evans is a really powerful figure – not someone to be taken lightly. Apparently, Evans’ voice actually *scared* him! He even called director Dexter Fletcher and told him he’d have to put in a lot of work to do the character justice, but he was grateful for Dexter’s confidence in him. It sounds like he really threw himself into the role, which is amazing! I’m even more excited for the project now, knowing how seriously he took it. Can’t wait to see it!
I discovered a bunch of old interviews with Bob on YouTube – they were from 1977 and really excellent. I listened to them over and over again, probably hundreds of times.
Despite some complaints about how accurately The Offer portrays real events, Goode has publicly stood by the show. He told a news outlet, “I find it amusing that this project is getting a negative reception.”
So, perhaps some things didn’t go as planned. But what did you think of the performances? Did you appreciate the amazing effort everyone put in, especially recreating the original Godfather set using the original blueprints?
Goode added that while he felt it was perhaps a little unfairly judged, the audience really enjoyed it. “That’s all we can ever hope for,” he said.
The Offer will land on ITVX on 12 October.
