After a two-year wait, Spy x Family is finally back with its long-awaited third season. However, during its time off from TV and movies, many other popular anime series and films emerged, offering fans the action and comedy they were craving. Spy x Family Season 3 now faces strong competition in genres it previously led, and its initial episode doesn’t quite make the splash some expected.
Spy x Family Season 3, Episode 1 isn’t a poor start to the season, but it’s just okay. Rather than making a strong impact or surprising viewers, the episode mostly revisits familiar ground and things fans already enjoy. There’s plenty to appreciate, particularly seeing so many favorite characters back, but it felt like it had the potential to be even better.
Spy x Family Season 3 Kicks Off With Anya’s Forboding Vision & A Secret Mission
Spy x Family fans eagerly awaiting the return of their beloved spy and assassin sitcom after almost two years will find that Season 3 feels instantly familiar. Following a brief, optional refresher, Spy x Family Season 3 resumes its format of self-contained stories with two new shorts. “Berlint Panic” shows the Forgers’ relaxing weekend disrupted by a worrying premonition from Anya and Bond, and “The Informant and Nightfall” teams up two surprising side characters for a unique mission.
In short, the Spy x Family Season 3 premiere is a great return to the anime’s familiar, everyday-life style. The tension between Ostania and Westalis is still present, but hasn’t escalated into a major crisis yet. For now, the characters are focused on completing their routine tasks while keeping up appearances. Because of this, the Season 3 debut of Spy x Family doesn’t feature any immediate dangers or high stakes.
If you were expecting the first episode of Spy x Family Season 3 to immediately jump into the main conflict and set up the season’s plot, you’ll likely be disappointed. It’s not that the episode’s two stories are poorly done-they simply weren’t intended to establish the overarching storyline. Spy x Family Season 3 essentially starts fresh, which is understandable after the events of the anime-original movie Spy x Family Code: White. Everything has returned to normal, and the season’s main goals will become clear as the story progresses.
The Forgers Are as Funny as Ever in Spy x Family Season 3
Spy x Family Season 3 started off perfectly with the episode “Berlint Panic.” The Forgers were enjoying a relaxing weekend at the park, but things quickly changed when Anya and Bond realized a stressed construction worker was about to lose control with his crane. What follows is the classic Spy x Family style of humor-a chain of funny misunderstandings. Each member of the Forger family attempts to fix the situation on their own, all while keeping their abilities and pasts hidden from one another.
“Berlint Panic” is a short that’s both enjoyable and well-paced. What starts as a simple feeling that Anya and Bond share quickly turns into a chain of surprising problems. The way each member of the Forger family has their own internal thoughts, imagining themselves as the main character, adds a lot to the humor. It’s always amusing to watch the Forgers come up with weak excuses to hide what they’re really up to, and to see them jump to wild conclusions based on misunderstandings.
The biggest criticism of “Berlint Panic” is that it doesn’t offer anything fresh for viewers who have been following the anime for a while. Essentially, “Berlint Panic” revisits the Forgers with an enjoyable, but ultimately unimportant, story. If you’ve seen any episode of Spy x Family, you’ve already experienced what this short has to offer. The only truly remarkable part is its brief commentary on the pressures faced by overworked laborers, specifically the construction worker driven to his limit by being forced to work on a holiday.
I think this little story mainly highlights the flaws within Ostania and the cracks beneath its perfect exterior. It doesn’t really shed much light on why Ostania is so militaristic, or the larger threat of war in the anime, but it does a good job of showing us the human side of the country, in a gentle way. That said, “Berlint Panic” isn’t really a Spy x Family short meant for deep political analysis or hints about what’s to come. It’s simply focused on showing the Forgers doing what they do best, and it definitely achieves that.
Spy x Family’s Season 3 Premiere Teases an All-New Power Couple
Spy x Family‘s Season 3 begins with the episodes “Berlint Panic” and “The Informant and Nightfall.” The story focuses on the secret agent Nightfall, who is also known as Fiona Frost, and a criminal informant named Frankie Franklin. The plot requires Nightfall to pretend to be Frankie’s girlfriend while they investigate a suspicious nightclub. Her goal is to find a skilled forger who operates within. Unsurprisingly, Nightfall is unhappy with this arrangement, leading to a series of comical events.
“The Informant and Nightfall” is a classic romantic comedy. Even though the basic storyline is familiar, it’s still enjoyable to see characters who are complete opposites interact. Nightfall is a cool, distant assassin focused solely on Loid, while Frankie is a quirky, somewhat shady informant with a secret affection for Nightfall. Seeing them put up with each other while working on a mission is a little predictable, but it’s still a lot of fun.
Keeping this in mind, “The Informant and Nightfall” is clever enough to not make Nightfall and Frankie’s “date” last any longer than necessary. Before Nightfall gets too irritated with Frankie, they encounter Quill, the forger. After that, the episode quickly changes pace and becomes an exciting pursuit. This is a big difference from the episode’s lighthearted beginning, where Nightfall easily overcame Frankie’s simple traps, and it serves as a good reminder of Spy x Family’s more serious and intense side.
Even more effectively, “The Informant and Nightfall” explores these underlying themes more thoroughly than “Berlin’s Panic.” The reason Nightfall undertakes the mission to create fake export papers is surprisingly trivial: a lack of Ostanian strawberries bothered Westalis’ foreign minister. This seemingly small issue is exactly the kind of ridiculous complaint that fits perfectly within the tone of a spy comedy like Spy x Family, but it also serves as a stark reminder that even conflicts-whether cold or otherwise-can be fueled by minor grievances. It makes sense that Frankie would play both sides as a way to act out, even though Nightfall doesn’t completely condone it.
CloverWorks & Wit Studio Make a Perfect Match in Spy x Family 3
Spy x Family is a standout anime, notably produced through the collaboration of two leading studios, and the quality really shows. Similar to earlier seasons, Season 3 is a joint effort between CloverWorks and Wit Studio, and their exceptional animation skills are evident throughout. The character designs are visually engaging, and the movements feel natural and smooth. The settings, from the cities of Ostania to its hidden underbelly, are beautifully rendered. The action sequences in each part are particularly enjoyable-the crane duel in “Berlint Panic” is a prime example. All of this is further enhanced by strong voice acting, a fitting background score, and skillful direction.
The production quality of Spy x Family‘s premiere remains consistently excellent, matching the high standard of previous seasons. It hasn’t gotten significantly better or worse-the animation and sound are exactly as fans expect. Hopefully, CloverWorks and Wit Studio are saving even more impressive animation and direction for future episodes. The first episode of Spy x Family Season 3 delivers everything fans remember and love about Spy x Family, and that’s a great start.
Spy x Family Season 3 is now streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
