The highly anticipated second season of Prime Video’s Bosch spinoff is reportedly in the works. The show premiered earlier this year and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both viewers and critics.
reports that Ballard will be back for a second season. However, Amazon MGM Studios, the company behind Ballard, hasn’t officially confirmed this yet. Still, a renewal isn’t surprising, as Ballard has been a success since it first aired earlier this year. The show features Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, a dedicated LAPD officer who heads up the cold case unit.
Ballard has received excellent reviews, earning a 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. Critics have highlighted the show as a well-made police procedural, comparable to Bosch but also uniquely engaging. Maggie Q’s acting has been particularly praised, with reviewers believing she confidently carries the series. Titus Welliver does make appearances as a special guest star, continuing his role from Bosch: Legacy.
Ballard’s renewal for Season 2 became much more certain after it received funding from the California Film Commission, practically guaranteeing its continuation. Combined with confirmation from Deadline, it’s now very likely that Prime Video will make an official announcement soon.
Ballard premiered on Prime Video on July 9th and immediately became a hit, rising to the top of the streaming charts. According to Deadline, the show garnered over 2.5 billion minutes of viewing time in the U.S. during July. It also consistently appeared on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 list for original streaming series, achieving a strong #4 ranking with over 619 minutes viewed the week of July 21.
The first season focused on Detective Ballard tackling unsolved cases and revisiting old investigations, while also building a larger, season-long storyline. As Ballard investigates these cold cases, she starts to reveal a network of corruption and secrets within the police force-which sets up an exciting conspiracy for the future. With Season 2 of Ballard reportedly coming soon, it’s unclear where the story will go next, but the series has a strong beginning and looks to continue the success of shows like Bosch and Bosch: Legacy.
Maggie Q Talks About Starring in Prime Video’s Ballard
Before Ballard came out earlier this year, the cast got together to talk about the Bosch spin-off, and Maggie Q shared her experience working on the show. She said, “I’m especially proud of this team because they don’t just deliver strong dramatic performances – they also manage to bring moments of joy, smiles, and humor to the work.”
For me, what really struck a chord was how the show couldn’t *just* be relentlessly dark when dealing with such heavy subject matter. As Q explained, it needed balance. We spoke with detectives who consult on the show, and they all emphasized the importance of humor – it was how they *survived* in that line of work. And honestly, watching my co-stars, I could see that come through. I think they portrayed that balance really beautifully. It felt authentic, and I think that’s what makes the show work so well. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it with a little levity.
Ballard is now streaming on Prime Video.
