It’s the weekend, which means there are some fantastic movies coming up on TV that you should definitely check out.
Whether you enjoyed the popular sci-fi film Dune or are interested in seeing a grand live-action remake of a beloved Disney story, there are lots of options available on BBC, ITV, and Channel 4.
Digital Spy has handily rounded-up 5 of the best.
What to Read Next
The King’s Man
The King’s Man is a prequel to the popular Kingsman films. It tells the story of how the secret organisation began, set during World War I. The film centers around a group of powerful historical figures who are conspiring to eliminate millions of people.
The film stars Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Harris Dickinson (Babygirl), Gemma Arterton (The Critic), Rhys Ifans (Spider-Man), and Matthew Goode (Dept Q}). Digital Spy called it a “satisfying blockbuster,” but noted it “might not entirely be what Kingsman fans expect.”
Airing Saturday at 9pm on Channel 4. Available on Channel 4 afterwards.
Dune (2021)
Praised as “breathtaking” by Globe and Mail and “electrifying” by The Observer, Dune brings Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction novel to the screen – a story many thought impossible to adapt for film. The story centers on Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis, but soon finds themselves caught in a conflict after being betrayed.
Okay, so I heard this movie got a really good score – 83% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, which is awesome! They’ve already made a second one, and apparently a third is coming too. If you want to see where it all began, it’s going to be on ITV1 this Saturday night. The cast is seriously impressive – you’ve got Silo’s Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac from Frankenstein, Zendaya who was amazing in Challengers, and even Dave Bautista from the Marvel universe all starring together. I’m definitely tuning in!
Airing Saturday at 9.15pm on ITV1. Available on ITVX afterwards.
Salt
For those craving more action, Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt in this 2010 film. She’s a CIA agent who finds herself a fugitive after being wrongly accused of being a Russian spy, all while desperately trying to clear her name.
Featuring Liev Schreiber, known from Asteroid City, and Chiwetel Ejiofor of Doctor Strange, Salt was mostly well-received. The Guardian described it as “fast-paced, clever, unconventional, and delivered with such energy and force that you don’t mind how unbelievable the story gets”.
Airing Saturday at 11.40pm on Channel 4.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
The 2017 remake of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was a massive hit, earning more than $1.2 billion worldwide and receiving mostly positive reviews.
Emma Watson plays Belle, a young woman held captive by a prince who has been transformed into a beast (Dan Stevens). She learns to look past his frightening appearance and see the kindness within, even as she’s relentlessly pursued by the villainous Gaston (Luke Evans). The cast also includes Ewan McGregor, known from Star Wars, Josh Gad from Frozen, Ian McKellen of Lord of the Rings, and Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson.
Airing Sunday at 2.40pm on BBC One. Available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.
Batman Begins
The first movie in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series showed us Christian Bale as Batman, telling his origin story as he battles criminals trying to ruin Gotham City.
Even though the hugely popular The Dark Knight came out in 2008, Batman Begins is still a great film. It has an impressive 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Radio Times described it as a movie that “grabs your attention and keeps you hooked until the very end.”
Airing Sunday at 10.20pm on ITV1. Available on ITVX afterwards.
The new edition of Living Legends is here! Buy Gaga in newsagents or online, priced at just £8.99.
