Eric Dane reveals horror ALS injury that forced him to miss the Emmys

Eric Dane shared the frightening injury he experienced right before he was scheduled to present an award at the Emmys.

The actor, 52 years old, shared that he had a fall in his kitchen and needed hospital treatment, which meant he couldn’t attend the award show. He had been diagnosed with ALS only six months prior to this incident.

In an interview with The Washington Post published on Thursday, he said he was ‘getting stitches put in my head.’

He was originally scheduled to join his Grey’s Anatomy costar Jesse Williams on stage at the awards show on September 14th. However, because he couldn’t attend, his former colleague had to present by themselves.

Williams didn’t say anything about Dane, nor did he explain why the Euphoria star wasn’t there when he spoke last month.

‘ALS is a nasty disease,’ he added. ‘I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to.’

He said it would have been wonderful to see Jesse and reconnect with old classmates. He also felt that presenting to his colleagues would have been a particularly meaningful experience.

This followed his strong promise to ‘fight until his last breath’ as he continues to battle ALS, after being seen using a wheelchair and having difficulty speaking.

Just after the Emmys ceremony last month, his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, shared details about how their family is coping with his diagnosis of ALS.

She shared that their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, are receiving support from therapists while their father copes with a worsening, degenerative neurological condition.

‘It’s just devastating,’ she shared with People magazine in an interview released on Saturday. ‘My daughters are really hurting, and we’re doing our best to cope. This is a very difficult period.’

Though their family is ‘really struggling,’ she said they are ‘taking it day by day.’

We’re working with skilled therapists, and we’re focusing on maintaining hope and approaching the situation with dignity, grace, and love.

Regarding how she was feeling, she confessed: ‘I haven’t reached a point where I can find something positive to focus on. I’m still working on it.’

The actress, age 54, wed Dane in 2004. They were married for 14 years, and she initially filed for divorce in 2018. However, the couple decided to end the divorce proceedings after seven years.

Dane shared news of his medical diagnosis one month after Gayheart asked the court to drop her divorce case.

Well, there’s certainly something that’s brought us all together, and Eric will always be family to me, regardless of whether we’re married, or even living together. We *are* closer now, but we don’t like the circumstances that led to it,” she explained.

She stated: ‘It’s a truly awful illness, and I really wish a treatment existed. I’m hopeful researchers will discover one quickly, as it’s incredibly heartbreaking.’

Earlier this year, Dane shared that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS is a disease that impacts the nervous system. Specifically, it affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, which gradually causes a loss of muscle control and eventually leads to paralysis as the condition progresses.
