Marvel Studios is pushing boundaries with its Disney+ shows, as Daredevil: Born Again will be the first MCU series rated TV-MA – the television equivalent of an R-rating – and is planned to run for at least three seasons. Up until now, Marvel Studios’ streaming projects have mostly been limited to single seasons, such as Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (though that could change in the future).
Daredevil: Born Again is unique. It received a renewal for a second season *before* the first season even aired – similar to Loki – and filming has now finished, with a release planned for 2026 on Disney+. The show has also been officially renewed for a third season. This is the first time a Disney+ series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe that contains mature content (or live-action content generally) has been renewed for a third season, marking an important step for Marvel Studios and its approach to streaming shows.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was thrilled to hear from Brad Winderbaum, the head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios. He recently told IGN that Daredevil: Born Again is officially happening for a third season! He simply stated, “We are greenlit for Season 3:” – which is all the confirmation a cinephile like me needs!
“In terms of ‘Daredevil,’ yeah, we are greenlit for Season 3 and we start shooting next year.”
The return of Daredevil marks a first for live-action Marvel Studios television series-it’s the first to get a third season, and notably, it’s also the first to be rated R.
The renewal of Daredevil: Born Again is a first for Disney+ within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – it’s the first R-rated series to get a third season. However, three other shows that aren’t rated for adults have also reached Season 3, and they are all animated series…
Every MCU Series To Get Three Seasons So Far
What If…?

One of the earliest looks into the Marvel Multiverse within the franchise, What If…? wondered how things would change if key moments in the MCU happened differently. This animated series, created by Marvel Animation, aired from 2021 to 2024 and presented these standalone stories drawn from across the Marvel universe.
This led to a massive showdown to save reality. A group of heroes from different universes – called The Exiles – joined forces to prevent the Watchers from wiping out the alternate timelines that gave rise to each of these distinct Variant characters.
What If…? actually paved the way for a new series, Marvel Zombies, which is an animated spin-off coming soon. It’s based on the popular episode from the first season where several well-known heroes from the MCU were infected with a Zombie virus.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Similar to Daredevil: Born Again, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is another Marvel Television show that has been renewed for a third season even before its second season has finished airing.
I have to say, this animated Spider-Man series is a real hit! It follows a young Peter Parker from another universe as he first becomes the wall-crawling hero we all know and love. And get this – the show was greenlit for a third season *before* the first one even aired! That’s how much confidence the studio had in it, and honestly, after watching it, I can see why. It’s a truly exciting romp.
The highly anticipated Season 2 of the show is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ around 2026. Because it’s branded as Marvel Studios’ first annual series, viewers can likely expect Season 3 in 2027, a year later.
X-Men 97

The popular X-Men mutants made a comeback to television in 2024 with the new series X-Men 97, a revival of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series. Even before the first season of this animated show premiered on Disney+, it had already been approved for a second season.
Although Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, a third season appears to be happening. Previously, reports indicated that What If…? writer Matthew Chauncey would become the lead writer for future episodes of X-Men 97, and Season 3 was said to be in development (according to Deadline).
The series might be featured at Marvel Animation’s panel during the upcoming New York Comic-Con, and that could be where we finally get confirmation that Season 3 is happening.
Daredevil: Born Again

Born Again is one of three series with a mature rating on Disney+ within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), alongside Echo and Marvel Zombies. Although a second season of the first is not expected, Zombies has proven very popular. A reliable insider shared with TopMob that the show’s narrative might be extended, potentially leading to a third season.
Regarding why no live-action series had achieved this level of success previously, Winderbaum explained to reporters in May that “Creating shows centered around well-known actors…made it difficult to produce several seasons.”
Daredevil: Born Again is coming back for a second season around 2026. The show will follow Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, building a team to fight Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), who has become the mayor of New York City and remains a major criminal threat.
A third season of the mature-themed streaming show is already planned, equaling the run of Netflix’s original Daredevil series (with Born Again continuing that story directly). Filming for Season 3 is scheduled to begin in 2026.
BONUS: WandaVision

WandaVision didn’t actually get multiple seasons (or even three), but it was the closest Marvel Studios show to have a long run until Daredevil: Born Again. The story started with the captivating first season in 2021, and has since continued in two more seasons on Disney+.
Agatha All Along reignited fan interest in the WandaVision universe in 2024, centering on Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) and her adventures on the Witches’ Road. Coming up next year, Vision Quest will continue the story of Paul Bettany’s Vision, following directly after the events of his previous appearance with Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff.
Though it doesn’t follow the typical pattern of Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3, it’s clear that WandaVision’s story hasn’t ended – it’s simply continued in other shows with different titles.
