A recent report is clarifying a rumor that has been circulating for over a year. With DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn getting ready for his Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, and as the second season of their HBO series wraps up, a film centered around one of the Justice League’s funnier characters is a definite possibility.
According to SuperHeroHype, James Gunn mentioned in February 2024, while addressing rumors about a casting call for Ruythye in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, that three additional films were being developed. One of these projects involved Darren Aronofsky ((Requiem for a Dream, The Whale)). Gunn also stated at the time that movies based on Sgt. Rock, and Plastic Man were also in the works.
“At least one of those statements isn’t accurate. Enjoy figuring out which one!” Gunn posted on Threads. It’s been nearly two years since then, and Supergirl has cast Eve Ridley as Ruthye. DC Studios has also announced that feature films for both Teen Titans and Sgt. Rock are in the works. Now, insider MyTimeToShineHello is reporting to ComicBookMovie that a Plastic Man movie is officially in development at DC Studios. However, very few details are available regarding the story, who will star, or if Gunn is trying to get Aronofsky to direct.
Two Iconic Actors Would Love to Play Plastic Man
If made, the movie will likely be a smaller-scale production, similar to Clayface and the previously stalled Sgt. Rock project. Plastic Man is well-known as a frequent source of humor in DC comics. Interestingly, the character didn’t actually begin with DC; he first appeared in Police Comics #1, published by Quality Comics in 1941. Created by Jack Cole, Plastic Man wasn’t brought to DC until 1956, at which point he became part of the DC universe.
Plastic Man is famous for his superpower: the ability to stretch and change his body into any shape or size imaginable. Originally, the character was a small-time criminal named Patrick “Eel” O’Brian. After an accident involving chemicals, he became Plastic Man. He even starred in his own cartoon show, which aired from 1979 to 1981.
If a movie about Plastic Man is ever made for theaters, it would mark the first time the character has been portrayed by live actors on screen. Several actors have expressed interest in playing the role, including Rainn Wilson (The Office) and . Schwartz has previously shared his vision for the character, explaining, “He could be comedic. He has a history as a major thief. I’m really into [Patrick] O’Brian as inspiration. And, he’s funny,” the actor added. “I think a funny character in the Justice League-because, technically, he *is* a member-would be a great contrast to all the other serious heroes they have.”
The next projects coming to the DCU are Supergirl, scheduled to be in theaters on June 26, 2026, and Clayface, which will be released on September 11, 2026.
