Cillian Murphy Denies Voldemort Rumors

The world of Harry Potter expands with a new television series from HBO, expected to premiere in 2027. While many of the lead roles have been filled, fans are especially eager to find out who will portray the villain, Voldemort.

There were a lot of actors people were hoping would play the role, but honestly, I think most of us are really hoping for Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy. It’s a shame he’s already shot down the rumors, though. He recently spoke with , while talking about his new show, Steve, and he basically confirmed he’s not interested in playing the part, just like he said before.

When people started talking online, I asked what was going on, and Murphy quickly shut it down. He said, “No, no, no. It would be very hard to follow Ralph Fiennes.” Honestly, that’s exactly what he’s said before about the actor who played Voldemort – he really respects Fiennes’ performance and doesn’t think anyone could measure up. It’s good to see him being so upfront.

After someone noted the statement sounded like something Voldemort might say, Murphy responded with a laugh, saying, “Ha! No, I don’t play those games.”

Murphy first addressed the fan casting earlier in September when responding to the online speculation. The actor confessed he *had* been made aware of it, saying, “My kids show it to me occasionally, but I’m like, ‘No, I don’t know anything about that.’ “

He gave the same answer then, commenting on the difficulty of following Ralph Fiennes’ performance. “It’s truly challenging to emulate anything Ralph Fiennes does,” he said, referring to Fiennes’ portrayal of the Dark Lord in the 2005 film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Fiennes was the only adult actor to play the role after two others had previously taken it on: Richard Bremmer in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Christian Coulson in 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Regarding Fiennes, he commented, “He’s a truly exceptional actor, a real legend. It will be quite a challenge for anyone taking on that role.”
