Derek Kolstad, who created the John Wick film series, has discussed where the story could go with John Wick: Chapter 5. He recently told ScreenRant that he’d considered an unexpected plot twist: John Wick forming an alliance with a character that audiences really don’t like.

He related the situation to something he remembered while watching Return of the Jedi. He specifically remembered when Darth Vader surprisingly turned against the Emperor, which shocked him and many other people watching at the time. It was a moment of complete disbelief. He felt a similar surprise in the current situation.

You know, when I think about our favorite action movies, it always comes down to this: it usually starts with us facing off, guns drawn, at the beginning. But then, by the third act, we’re always teaming up, back to back, to fight the real bad guys. It’s a classic trope, and I love it!

Kolstad shared his desire for a surprising reveal in John Wick 5, similar to past twists. He explained, “I’m hoping the story leads to a situation where someone you’ve been led to dislike turns out to be important, and you realize it’s a battle against multiple enemies – and you really want to defeat them.” He finished by saying, “That’s the direction I envision, and I wish everyone involved all the best, honestly.”

While Kolstad hasn’t officially said if we’ll see a team-up with the High Table, it’s still possible.
