The Justice League in the Absolute Universe is surprisingly dark, and it’s not due to any of its heroes being especially villainous. It’s a twist readers likely didn’t see coming, stemming from aspects other than the team’s heroic qualities.
Following a gathering of the world’s most notorious villains-who’ve come together to tackle common issues in Absolute Evil #1 (from Al Ewing, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Tom Napolitano)-readers witness the uncompromising Joker of the Absolute Universe unveil what might be the biggest scientific breakthrough ever: the Omega Particle. This newly discovered particle allows for a detailed study and measurement of the Absolute Universe itself, and also Darkseid’s power within it. Crucially, it validates the Joker’s belief that their reality operates under a distinctly pessimistic set of rules. If the villains hope to maintain some control and prevent things from going further awry-especially with the emergence of opposing vigilantes-they’ll need to create a team of their own, essentially a Justice League, to counter the threat.

What is now known as the Absolute Universe used to be called the Elseworld – a distant and undeveloped part of the Multiverse. It began to develop in . The story followed Darkseid, who had merged with the Spectre, as he single-handedly fought the newly formed Justice League Unlimited. During Darkseid’s attack on the JLU’s Watchtower, Superman, empowered by magic, apparently destroyed Darkseid, ending the battle. However, this act unintentionally allowed Darkseid’s mind to become connected to the very essence of this new universe, starting the evolution of the Absolute Universe.
Since then, the Absolute Universe has featured many famous heroes like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, along with unique versions of characters such as the Martian Manhunter. This universe is also filled with powerful villains who control much of the world, including Hector Hammond, Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, and the Joker. These villains teamed up in Absolute Evil to confront the heroes who have emerged recently. What’s more concerning is that the villains in Absolute Evil are only a small fraction of the many who inhabit the Absolute Universe, and they are all becoming increasingly powerful compared to the heroes.
The message states, “Without heroes… without protection… without restraint… there is only Absolute Evil…” The rise of superheroes has gained worldwide attention, and those in power have definitely noticed. Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, Hector Hammond, and the enigmatic Joker have been working against each other until now, but this increasing danger demands fresh strategies… and new alliances. A secret betrayal within their group is about to happen, and if they don’t act quickly, they will lose control of a planet they intended to dominate!
