Matt Smith will be starring as a frustrating and unlikeable hero in The Death of Bunny Munro, a series based on the novel written by musician Nick Cave. The limited series, which is set in Sussex and will be available on Sky and Now in November, has just released a short preview showing Smith as the main character.
Bunny, described as a man with a compulsive need for sex, who works as a door-to-door beauty product salesman and considers himself a ladies’ man, is now solely responsible for raising his young son, Bunny Junior (Rafael Mathé). This happened after his wife, Libby (Sarah Greene), tragically took her own life.
According to the synopsis, as Bunny and Junior each cope with their sadness in very different ways, Bunny takes Junior on a chaotic road trip selling things door-to-door throughout Brighton and the nearby coastline.
What to Read Next
The short preview shows the father and son setting off on a trip, with Bunny quickly moving between different sales presentations. As Junior communicates with the spirit of his mother, Bunny tries to impress his female customers by offering them the hope of beauty and joy.
“You’ve got to sell them the dream,” Bunny tells his son in the clip.

When Junior asks what the dream is, Bunny replies without missing a beat, “Me”.
When Bunny understood how much impact he had on Junior, he made a conscious effort to support his son and stop the cycle of harmful, sexist behavior.
When discussing the project before, former Doctor Who actor Smith described it as a “wonderful look at love, sadness, and disorder”.
“Working with Nick Cave on The Death of Bunny Munro is a real privilege,” they stated. “It’s a wonderfully insightful look at love, sorrow, and turmoil. Ultimately, it’s a profoundly moving and complex story about a father and son navigating loss and adapting to change.”

Meanwhile, Cave said nobody could embody Bunny “better than Matt Smith”.
Wow, I was so excited to hear what the musician had to say about the adaptation! They said, “Finally, someone with the courage to take on this unholy tale!” I’m seriously thrilled that Sky and Clerkenwell Films are finally bringing Bunny to life, showing all his flaws and everything. And honestly, I can’t imagine anyone better than Matt Smith to play him. He’s just perfect for the role, in my opinion!
I first read Cave’s novel back in 2009, and The Telegraph totally nailed it – they called it “accessible, thrilling and gloriously impolite”! And honestly, I have to agree. The Observer went even further, describing the character Bunny as “an antihero of epic proportions“, and I think that’s a perfect way to put it. It really stuck with me.
The Death of Bunny Munro will launch on Sky and streaming service NOW on 20 November.
