Ethan Hawke and Mason are promoting their 2021 psychological horror movie. Though it won’t be released in theaters until October 17th, it’s already receiving very positive reviews from critics.
Ethan Hawke is back as The Grabber, and Mason Thames returns as young Finney in Black Phone 2, the follow-up to 2021’s The Black Phone. Produced by Blumhouse and Universal, the latest trailer indicates that fans can expect a very intense and violent slasher film, with The Grabber now targeting victims in their dreams.
Okay, so the new trailer for Black Phone 2 just dropped, and it’s seriously creepy! It starts with this line – “Hell is different than you think,” – and then we get more of The Grabber talking about himself as a “bottomless pit of sin.” Honestly, chills! This sequel is being directed by Scott Derrickson, and the script is by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, building on the characters originally created by Joe Hill. You can check out the full, pretty bloody final trailer right below. I’m already hooked!
Black Phone 2 has received 21 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and currently holds a strong 81% rating. Stephen King, a well-known figure in the horror genre, is already generating excitement for the upcoming sequel. In a recent post, King shared his thoughts, stating that Black Phone 2 is “not as good as the first one,” but then immediately added, “IT’S BETTER.”
Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King, wrote the short story. It was originally published in The 3rd Alternative #39 in 2004, and later included in 20th Century Ghosts in 2005. The movie adaptation proved to be a financial hit, grossing $161.4 million worldwide on a budget of only $18 million.
Black Phone 2’s Reviews Have Been Mainly Positive
According to Zachary Lee of MovieWeb, reported via Rotten Tomatoes, Black Phone 2 “sets a good example for how sequels can stand on their own and attract a wider audience,” getting us as close to the feeling of A Nightmare on Elm Street as possible until a new film in that series is made. Brandon Wainerdi of Fangoria stated that the sequel is “a solid follow-up that fans of the original will appreciate.”
However, Caitlin Kennedy from Simply Cinema stated that “Despite Black Phone 2’s impressive visuals and special effects, the sequel feels a bit immature.” Mary Beth McAndrews, in a Rotten Tomatoes review, noted that “Black Phone 2 doesn’t quite reach its full potential because of overly dramatic dialogue and a greater emphasis on religious faith.”
The initial film focused on “Grabber” (Hawke), who kidnapped Finney (Thames). While held captive in the Grabber’s basement, Finney finds a phone that allows him to hear the voices of the Grabber’s previous victims. According to Bloody Disgusting, an official synopsis of Black Phone 2 states: “Four years ago, 13-year-old Finn killed his abductor and escaped, becoming the sole survivor of the Grabber. But true evil transcends death…and the phone is ringing again.” In the upcoming movie, Hawke reprises his role and seeks revenge on Finn by “menacing Finn’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).”
The Black Phone is streaming on Peacock. Black Phone 2 will hit theaters on Oct. 17.
