Avengers: Doomsday first-look set photo leaves Marvel fans confused, annoyed and excited

A first glimpse from the set of Avengers: Doomsday has been revealed, sparking a variety of reactions from fans. The initial image was shared by the directors, the Russo brothers, on their Instagram account.

The image shows a mysterious, dark figure seated on a stage. The creators have asked viewers to really examine the picture, prompting speculation about the figure’s identity.

Lots of people have been attempting to solve this puzzle – it reminds them of a similar trick the pair pulled before Endgame, where a hidden message revealed the 2019 film’s title – but some are still confused.

One fan jokingly commented on Reddit, “Brothers I can’t see shit,” referring to the very dark, black-and-white picture. Another user quipped on Instagram: “Ok, I really tried to examine it, but I got a headache from squinting so much. I’m waiting for more details.”

Many people expressed their annoyance by referencing a previous Endgame-related event. One Reddit user wrote, “Not this again!”, while another commented, “Oh no, here we go with these kinds of clues again.”

Despite the initial confusion, many fans were thrilled by the teaser and shared their theories. One fan speculated: “This is definitely Avengers versus X-Men. I see A | X rather than A v X, but there’s still a clear division between the A and the X to me.”

“The Avengers ‘A’ on the left. The multiple X-Men ‘X’s’ on the right. The dots on the left side of the crane form a ‘V’ and the dots on the right side form a letter ‘S’. AVENGERS VS. X-MEN. In an additional movie?” another echoed.

With many theories circulating, Chris Hemsworth, one of the movie’s lead actors, recently addressed rumors that his character, Thor, might die in Doomsday. He did so after posting a collection of clips featuring Thor and expressing his gratitude to fans.

I had already begun developing this character further, and this experience has been the most significant of my career,” he shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “Therefore, the video was simply an expression of thanks, and nothing more. However, it was unfortunately misinterpreted and seen in a different light.”

Doomsday, scheduled for release next year, boasts a fantastic cast of Marvel characters, with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of the villain, Dr. Doom. This will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.

Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters starting December 18, 2026. All four Avengers films are currently available to watch on Disney+.
