Death in Paradise lovers are set to enjoy some exciting news! Justin Young, who writes for the popular detective show, has developed a brand new mystery series for the BBC.
Based on the popular book series Crookhaven by JJ Arcanjo, the show is scheduled to debut in 2026. The broadcaster has also shared some initial images from filming.
Called a “gripping, morally complex, twisty mystery exploring themes of identity, loyalty, and chosen family”, the BBC explains that the series is set in a hidden school for criminals. It follows a group of students learning to hone their skills with the goal of restoring balance, justice, and order to the world. As they uncover the dark secrets of Crookhaven, they also face a frightening foe – The Nameless.
What to Read Next
Dougray Scott, who you might recognize from films like Ever After, Mission: Impossible 2 and Crime, will play the role of Caspian Lockett, the headmaster at Crookhaven. His wife in real life, Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black, Industry), will play Caspian’s wife, Carmen.
Also joining the cast is Keith Allen (The Pembrokeshire Murders), who will play Erasmus Sisman, the school’s new head of security.
Regarding the students at Crookhaven, the BBC has stated that the story will focus on “Gabriel, a remarkably skilled pickpocket, portrayed by Lucas Leach, and his competitor, Penelope, the headmaster’s daughter, played by Carmel Laniado.”
Additionally, Amari Bacchus, Sani Thabo, Leila Khan, Charlie Mann, Rowan McIntosh, Aerona Shi and Tipper Seifert-Cleveland will be featured as trainees known as Crooklings.
Regarding the initial photos released from the show, executive producer Mark Freeland stated: “These pictures give a taste of the mystery, suspense, comedy, and excitement that define the story of Crookhaven. We are excited for viewers of all ages to become fully engaged in this world and to get to know the memorable characters, brought to life by a wonderful cast of actors.”
I’ve truly enjoyed adapting JJ Arcanjo’s wonderful books, especially while working with the talented writing of Justin Young.
So, I’m really excited about this new show, Crookhaven! It’s going to be eight episodes long and they actually filmed it in Northern Ireland. I was reading an interview with the creator, Young, and he told the BBC that he and his daughters absolutely loved the first Crookhaven book. He said he instantly knew it could become a really exciting and classic series that the whole family could enjoy. It sounds amazing, and I can’t wait to check it out!
Creating the world of Crookhaven has been a wonderful experience. It’s a real honour and exciting to collaborate with such a remarkably skilled cast and crew – a fantastic combination of experienced professionals and brilliant newcomers.
Crookhaven will land on BBC iPlayer early next year.
