Although Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban might be ending their 19-year marriage, there was a period when the actress couldn’t picture herself with anyone else. It seems she once felt strongly about their future together, but things have changed. The couple’s separation has surprised many.
As this decade began, the 58-year-old Australian actress spoke extensively about her then-husband, sharing that he made her feel safe and secure.
In older interviews that have recently come to light, she explained that marrying the country music star, 57, helped her feel “much more comfortable” after her divorce from Tom Cruise in the early 2000s.
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, both 63, were married for 11 years, from 1990 until 2001. During their marriage, they adopted two children: Isabella, who is now 32, and Connor, 30.
Only four years after that, in 2005, she encountered Keith Urban at a G’Day LA gathering. They got married the next year and welcomed two daughters: Sunday Rose, who is now 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
In a 2020 interview with Marie Claire magazine, Kidman openly discussed the beginning of her romance with Urban, following her divorce from Cruise.

You know, Keith really came into my life at the perfect time. He’s been such a support system, truly protecting me and helping me grow. He’s shown me so much love, and honestly, he’s given me a real boost in confidence – I feel so much more comfortable being myself around him. It’s been amazing, honestly. He’s just been incredible, and I’m so grateful for everything. It’s made a huge difference in my life.
She explained that he understands her true self and has helped her become more open. She described herself as an introvert, while Keith is an extrovert.
The next year, Kidman discussed in an interview with Bazaar how ‘open’ she was to Urban, sharing her feelings.
It came during a question about how she navigates public interest in her romantic relationships.
She explained, ‘I can be cautious and have experienced pain, but I generally prefer to respond with kindness and openness instead of being defensive or shutting down.’
My husband, Keith, tells the story of asking me, “How’s your heart?” when we first met. I supposedly replied with a simple, “Open.”
During the same interview, Kidman also shared that she initially thought Urban wasn’t attracted to her when they first encountered each other.
She remembered seeing him deliver a speech celebrating his mother at the G’Day LA event where they first met.

Her sister, Antonia, who was younger, leaned towards Kidman and quietly said: ‘Well, it doesn’t get much better than that.‘
‘Yeah, but he’s not gonna be interested in me,’ Kidman said she responded.
She continued, explaining that he initially didn’t seem very interested in her-though he now claims that wasn’t the case, and that he was simply intimidated.
Oh my gosh, I was completely obsessed with him, seriously! It took a while to get his attention, you know? And then he finally said to me, “That is so incorrect, Nicole.”
This news follows reports that Kidman will have primary custody of her daughters, Sunday and Faith, as she and Urban go through their divorce.
Court documents obtained by Daily Mail show the actress and the country singer have come to an uncommon agreement regarding how they’ll raise their children. According to the plan, Kidman will spend 306 days each year with the kids, while Urban will have just 59 days.
Urban will spend every other weekend with the children, from 10am on Saturdays to 6pm on Sundays. Kidman will be responsible for their care during all other times.
The separated couple have agreed on how they’ll share holidays with their daughters: Nicole Kidman will spend Mother’s Day and Easter with them, and Keith Urban will have them for Father’s Day and Thanksgiving.

The document also states that Kidman and Urban will jointly make important choices about their daughters’ lives, such as schooling and activities outside of school.
Both parties will not receive ongoing monthly child support because Urban has already covered all child support payments in advance.
Even though they are getting divorced, both celebrities have agreed to continue offering their children a loving, stable, consistent, and nurturing upbringing.
Kidman and Urban also must not ‘speak badly of each other’ or about other family members.
Oh my gosh, I just read that they’re going to ‘encourage’ their kids to ‘love the other parent and be comfortable in both families!’ It’s like, can you even imagine? They’re trying to be so mature about it, making sure the children feel okay spending time with *both* of them. It’s honestly…amazing. I just want the best for everyone involved, and this sounds like a really good step. I’m so glad they’re prioritizing the kids’ feelings and want them to be happy, even if they’re not together. It’s just…*perfect*.
Following the divorce filing, celebrities are also obligated to complete a required parenting class within 60 days. This is a court-ordered seminar designed to help co-parents navigate post-divorce parenting.
The officially certified parenting plan was signed by the Oscar winner on September 6th. Her soon-to-be ex-husband signed it a little earlier, on August 29th.
The ex-couple have agreed to forgo both child and spousal support, and they will each pay half of the court fees.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are getting divorced. Kidman officially filed the papers on Tuesday, ending their 19-year marriage. The reason given for the split is irreconcilable differences.
Recently, the former couple has been physically separated due to their busy work commitments – including filming and touring. A source previously shared with Daily Mail that Kidman was completely ‘blindsided’ when they decided to split up.
A source also shared with Daily Mail that there’s talk Keith Urban may already be dating someone new – a younger woman who also works in the music business.
According to a reliable source in Nashville’s music industry, the buzz is that he’s dating someone younger who also works in the business. It’s the main topic of conversation right now. People are eager to find out her identity, but so far, it remains unknown.
Daily Mail has contacted representatives of Kidman and Urban for comment and has yet to hear back.
