Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Highlander.
As a huge fan of the original, I’m really excited about the Amazon MGM Studios’ remake of Highlander! I was so looking forward to it starting filming this fall, but unfortunately, it’s been delayed. Apparently, Henry Cavill, who’s taking on the role of Connor MacLeod, got injured while they were prepping for the shoot. Now, production isn’t expected to begin until 2026. It’s a bummer, but hopefully, he makes a full recovery and we get a fantastic movie eventually!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Irons is joining the cast as the film’s villain. He will portray the leader of a clandestine group known as The Watchers, whose purpose is to monitor immortals, believing they pose a danger to humankind.
Both Irons and Cavill appeared in films within the DC Extended Universe. Irons played Alfred Pennyworth, and Cavill portrayed Clark Kent/Superman. Irons received the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in the 1990 film Reversal of Fortune, and he’s also known for movies like The Lion King (1994), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Dungeons & Dragons (2000), Assassin’s Creed (2016), House of Gucci (2021), and The Beekeeper (2024), among others.
What else do we know about the Highlander reboot?
In addition to the previously announced actors, the Highlander cast features Russell Crowe as Ramirez and Dave Bautista as The Kurgen. Karen Gillan will portray MacLeod’s wife, and Marisa Abela will play his love interest in the present day. Djimon Hounsou will appear as an African warrior, and the film also stars Max Zhang and Drew McIntyre.
The screenplay was written by Michael Finch. Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing the film for United Artists, with additional production support from Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.
There’s no confirmed release date for the upcoming Highlander remake just yet. However, you can currently watch the original 1986 film – directed by Russell Mulcahy and featuring Christopher Lambert – on streaming services like Prime Video and Peacock, among others.
