Although Halloween isn’t for another month, Disney+ has already been celebrating “Huluween” for some time, with it dominating the platform’s most-watched list. However, Noah Hawley’s thought-provoking series – a spin-off from the classic, frightening sci-fi movie series – has now been overtaken by a different kind of scary content, which is currently the most popular show on Disney+.
Marvel Zombies is now the second most-watched title on Disney+ in the US, just after Pixar’s new movie, Elio. It remains popular, currently at #2, but has dropped to #9 on the overall list. This puts it as the third most popular TV series on the platform right now, with the three-part true crime documentary Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg? in second place and holding the fourth spot on the Top 10 list.
The highly anticipated series, all four episodes of which were released simultaneously, premiered on Disney+ on Sept. 24. The series, which brings the iconic Xenomorph to the home world of those it hunts, had only begun airing the previous day, setting the stage for the comic book-based limited series to become the platform’s most popular episodic title in the horror genre.
Stemming from Disney+’s animated series What If…? – which retells famous Marvel Cinematic Universe events and character stories – Marvel Zombies takes its name and basic idea from a comic book series (one of several) that came out between December 2005 and April 2006. That series, written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, featured a world where most superheroes are infected with a virus, turning them into flesh-eating zombies. This adaptation, created by Bryan Andrews and Zeb Wells, also brings back many well-known actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play their popular characters, including Paul Rudd as Scott “Ant-Man” Lang, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and many others.
What’s Next For Alien: Earth and Marvel Zombies
This might be only the beginning of the competition for dominance in streaming between Alien: Earth and Marvel Zombies. Although a second season hasn’t been officially announced, Noah Hawley has hinted at the possibility of continuing this strange, futuristic story. He’s described the initial eight episodes as a “test run” to see if there’s interest in further adventures with Xenomorphs and Synthetics. He could further boost enthusiasm for a continuation by finding a way to include a star from the original Alien franchise in future episodes.
Regarding the future of Marvel Zombies, the animated series was always intended to be a limited run, similar to the original comic books it’s based on. But, Brad Winderbaum, the executive producer and head of Marvel Television, mentioned that there’s plenty of story material available to expand it if it gains enough traction on Disney+.
Given its high ranking among shows on the streaming service and the very positive reaction from viewers (even though a few critics had reservations), Winderbaum and his team can confidently say they’ve succeeded in their goals.
Marvel Zombies is now streaming on Disney+, while Alien: Earth is available on both Disney+ and Hulu.
