Warning: The following contains spoilers from The Voice episode that originally aired on September 29th. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch this season with a Peacock subscription to catch up.
The Voice has been on television for almost 15 years, so it’s common for the show’s rules to be updated or modified each season. This year, in the 2025 season, a new element was introduced involving Carson Daly and a special card called the Carson Callback. Daly used this new ability during the Season 28 premiere, but I was disappointed that it couldn’t assist another talented performer.
Justin Jenks anticipated his voice would be unexpected on The Voice during the third night of Blind Auditions, though he’d hoped for a better reaction. The 32-year-old offered a fresh take on Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy,” but unfortunately, none of the coaches turned their chairs. Both Michael Bublé and Niall Horan expressed disappointment, noting they initially believed they were hearing a duet. Bublé commented:
Justin, please come back, because today there just happened to be an idiot sitting in my seat.
Reba McEntire agreed with that sentiment, sharing that she and Snoop Dogg initially believed Justin Jenks was female (Snoop Dogg even asked the artist to sing to confirm he was the source of the high-pitched vocals). McEntire explained:
Look, as a critic, I’m just saying – things could be a whole lot better around here. Honestly, I wish whoever’s in charge would reconsider and bring back the previous team. We’d be looking at four genuinely insightful coaches instead of the folks we have now. It’s just my opinion, but I think it would make a huge difference. Maybe then we’d actually have some intelligent discussion.
It’s really frustrating, because this situation is precisely why the Carson Callback exists-to prevent talented performers from being overlooked. The idea started on the first night of Blind Auditions when the host was upset that no coaches turned for Ryan Mitchell. He was given a second chance to audition the next day with a new song, and he ultimately joined Reba McEntire’s team.
Let me clarify, I’m genuinely thrilled for Ryan Mitchell and wish him all the best with his pairing. However, I’m a little disappointed that Carson Daly has already used the save option for any artist in this current round of the competition. It feels like that opportunity is now gone for everyone else.
Whatever happened to the Coach Replay? I wasn’t sure about that rule when it started, but Justin Jenks showed me exactly how useful it is. Now, instead of each coach being able to save one contestant they didn’t choose, only Carson Daly has that power to save someone, and he already used it during the season premiere.
Check out Jenks’ audition below and see if you agree he belongs on a team:
I’m hoping we’ll see Justin Jenks again soon. The Voice filmed much of its new Season 29 at the same time as the episodes of Season 28 we’re currently watching, so he might still be around! We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Let’s hope the coaches don’t make any further errors, as they no longer have the Carson Callback to assist them. The Voice broadcasts on NBC Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET, and episodes become available on Peacock the following day.
