Matthew McConaughey shared that fear prevented him from marrying his longtime partner, Camila Alves, and the mother of his children. He explained that it wasn’t a lack of wanting to marry her, but rather apprehension that held him back.
The 55-year-old Oscar winner has been with his now-wife, 42, since 2006. Together, they have two children: Levi, 17, and Vida, 15. The couple eventually got married in 2012.
They later welcomed second son Livingston, 12, in 2013.
During an appearance on the Chris Williamson’s Modern Wisdom podcast, the Dallas Buyers Club star explained that he decided to propose to his partner after his son, Levi, questioned why his mother’s last name differed from theirs.
He said: ‘My son comes to me at four years old and says, “Why isn’t Mama McConaughey?”
I was really confused and thinking hard. You’re only four years old! I just sat there and thought to myself, “Wow, did your mother really let you be with this person?”

That’s a good point, but the reason we don’t share a last name is simply because we aren’t married. Changing your name is something people typically do after getting married, you see? Okay.
Then, he started telling a story, and suddenly he asked, “Are you frightened?” I was only four years old, you know. And I responded, “Yeah, I think I am.”
As a longtime admirer of Matthew McConaughey, I was really struck by something he shared recently. He’s a very spiritual guy, and he told a story about seeking guidance from his pastor. He explained that he’d spoken with a lot of experienced, married men – guys who’d been together for decades – and his pastor then asked him this, calling him ‘Mr. Risk Taker’: ‘What’s the bigger risk?‘ It really got me thinking, and it’s such a McConaughey thing to say – so insightful and thought-provoking. He’s always been so open about his faith and seeking wisdom, and this just felt very authentic to his journey. It’s a quote I’ve been pondering ever since.
Continuing as you are, things seem to be progressing well, or you could explore the deeper commitment of the marriage covenant – a sacred agreement between you, your partner, and God. This three-part journey will then continue.
That promises to be an adventure all on its own. You’re asking what’s more risky? I responded, “Honestly, getting married is the bigger gamble.”
He simply stopped speaking. This silence was a key reason I supported affirmative action; it was the outcome I hoped for and a strategic approach to address the situation.
I was hesitant to move forward simply because it felt expected. The moment has arrived. We’ve been together for quite some time now. We became engaged, but I didn’t want to follow traditional procedures.
I was really struck by this story. It turns out the actor had been intentionally creating some space between himself and his mother, Kay, for almost ten years. The reason? She was reportedly sharing private details about his life with the news media. It’s a tough situation, but he felt he needed to protect himself. It just goes to show, even with fame and fortune, family dynamics can be incredibly complex.

The Academy Award-winning actor and his 93-year-old mother discussed with People magazine the difficult situation that arose when Matthew discovered his mother was breaking his confidence by sharing private information with others.
The Dazed and Confused actor explained that he didn’t end the relationship with his mother entirely, but he became much more careful about what he told her. He started keeping things more private and didn’t share as much information as he used to. It was a shift towards a more guarded approach.
The Dallas Buyers Club star explained, ‘For around eight years, I could only have brief talks with her during our Sunday calls,’ because she was revealing a lot of details at the time.
The True Detective star explained he didn’t have to do much investigating to figure out the source of the leaks. He quickly understood where the information was coming from and didn’t need extensive research to discover it.
I used to share things with her on Sundays, often when her son and mother were around, and then I’d see those same things reported in the news or the local newspaper on Tuesdays,” McConaughey explained to the magazine.
Kay, who portrays the mother of McConaughey’s character, Kevin McKay, in his new AppleTV+ thriller The Lost Bus, explained to the publication about a difficult period: ‘We were on a break in filming.‘
Matthew explained that things changed when Kay allowed journalists access to his childhood home, and he subsequently saw the coverage on TV a few days later.

Oh my gosh, you won’t *believe* what Kay told me! She was giving a tour of the house – *the* house! – and she pointed to Matthew’s bedroom, saying, “Well, this is where Matthew slept.” And then, get this, someone actually *called* him while she was talking and asked, “Are you watching what your mama’s doing?” I’m seriously losing it! It’s just… everything!
Kay added, ‘I was so proud that I was just telling the world.’
Matthew explained he was annoyed by his mother’s invasion of privacy, but noted she had a funny response when he brought up the awkward subject with her.
Matthew explained, ‘Whenever I call her, she picks up. I ask, “Mom, what happened?” and she replies, “What?” I tell her, “Please don’t just say ‘What?'”‘
