Good news for fans who have been hoping for another film in this famous series! Disney has just announced that, after 20 years since The Simpsons Movie was released in cinemas, the much-loved family from Springfield will be returning to the big screen.
Disney confirmed on Monday, September 29th, that they are making another The Simpsons movie. While the movie doesn’t have a title yet, it does have a release date. The second Simpsons movie will be released in theaters on July 23, 2027.
The first Simpsons movie came out in theaters in 2007. It was based on The Simpsons TV show that had been running for many years on Fox, and was originally created by Matt Groening. Disney’s 20th Century Studios announced a new Simpsons movie through a post on Instagram, which you can view below.
The post featured an image of Homer Simpson reaching for one of his famous pink donuts, but this one was specially made in the shape of the number “2.” The picture was captioned: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” The Instagram post has already received almost 100,000 likes. One follower, using the username 22songsaboutspringfield, commented, “Why now? Why not 20 years ago?”
The second Simpsons movie is scheduled to come out on July 23, 2027, taking the place of a previously planned, unnamed Marvel film. The Simpsons movie will compete with Warner Bros.’ animated musical Bad Fairies, as both are set to open on the same weekend.
The Simpsons originally started airing on Fox in 1989 and just began its 37th season. Matt Groening created the show alongside James L. Brooks and Sam Simon. Before becoming a full series, the Simpson family first showed up on The Tracey Ullman Show as part of a collection of short animated segments.
Released in July 2007, The Simpsons Movie grossed $536 million worldwide. The film featured the same voice cast as the TV show, including Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson, Julie Kavner as Marge, Nancy Cartwright as Bart, and Yeardley Smith as Lisa. Currently, details about the plot of the new Simpsons movie haven’t been made public. The storyline of the first film involved the Environmental Protection Agency enclosing Springfield in a dome after Homer accidentally contaminated the local water supply.
The Simpsons’ 37th Season Just Premiered
I’m really excited about what’s coming up on Fox! As The Simpsons’ executive producer Matt Selman previously shared with Entertainment Weekly, they’ve already hinted at how the show will tackle that big milestone.
The key is crafting stories that don’t feel like they’ve been around forever – like the show is still fresh and new,” Sellman explained. “We also need to make sure we’re not retreading old ground, or creating episodes that lack a unique voice or meaningful content. A good approach is to really explore the town and its residents – all the quirky, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and ridiculous people of Springfield,” he added.
Season 37 began with the episode titled “Thrifty Ways to Thieve Your Mother.” The episode features Marge feeling nostalgic for the 1990s as Lisa searches through her mom’s old wardrobe. Meanwhile, the family decides to wait before going to the cinema, figuring the movie they want to see will be available on streaming services soon.
The latest episode of The Simpsons will debut on October 5th on Fox. You can watch the series on both Disney+ and Hulu. The original The Simpsons Movie from 2007 is also available on Disney+ and Hulu. And a new Simpsons movie, currently without a title, is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 23, 2027.
