Michelle Pfeiffer shared the joyful news that she’s become a grandmother for the first time, in a recent and unusually candid interview this week.
Actress Michelle Pfeiffer, 67 – known for her role in What Lies Beneath and mother to two children with husband David E. Kelley, 69 – surprised listeners with a revelation during Monday’s episode of the SmartLess podcast. She generally keeps her personal life private, making the announcement particularly noteworthy.
The Golden Globe winner explained that having more children has caused her to rethink her career plans. She said that her growing family has made her reconsider what work commitments she’ll take on in the future. More details are expected soon.
She explained: ‘I simply don’t have the time or the inclination to dedicate myself so intensely for such a prolonged period, especially if it means being disconnected from the present moment. It’s become clear to me that my time is limited, and – I may share this news on the show – I became a grandmother last year.’
I haven’t really talked about it, but it’s absolutely wonderful. It’s unbelievable, really. If I’d known I was going to become a grandmother, I wouldn’t have committed to so much work, but I’ve truly enjoyed everything and I’m very thankful.
I’ve truly enjoyed – I continue to love – all of these projects. Interestingly, letting go of the stress I used to feel about the creative process has actually liberated me, and I think it’s even made me a better artist in some ways.

Pfeiffer adopted her daughter, Claudia, who is now 32, in 1993, and then had her son, John Henry, 31, the next year. She hasn’t shared whether either of her children have had children of their own.

It happened at just the right moment, really. Michelle explained, ‘It truly shows what kind of person he is, but it also highlights that always sticking to the usual methods isn’t necessarily the most effective approach.’
Kelley adopted Claudia in 1993 following his marriage to Michelle.
