Andrew Garfield Finally Addresses Possible Return for The Social Network Follow-Up

Andrew Garfield has clearly stated, though somewhat sadly for fans, that he won’t be back for a follow-up film, The Social Reckoning. He originally portrayed Eduardo Saverin in the 2010 movie about Facebook.

In a recent conversation with Indiewire, Garfield stated he won’t reprise his role in the forthcoming sequel. He jokingly explained, “No, no, Eduardo is in Singapore having a good time.” In the original film, Garfield’s character, Saverin, played a crucial part in the storyline, which centered on Mark Zuckerberg facing a lawsuit from Saverin during a lengthy legal deposition, and simultaneously dealing with problems caused by twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (portrayed by Armie Hammer in a dual performance).

Even without the movie, Saverin probably wouldn’t be heavily involved in The Social Reckoning, as he gave up his U.S. citizenship and moved to Singapore back in 2009. Although he isn’t in the film, Garfield shared that he’s still looking forward to seeing it, responding with “Oh, yeah,” when asked if he would be watching.

More information about the sequel to The Social Network was revealed last week, fifteen years after the first movie was released. Sony Pictures has described it as a “companion piece” to the original. The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Oct. 9, 2026, and Jeremy Strong, who has been nominated for an Oscar, will portray Mark Zuckerberg, succeeding Jesse Eisenberg in the role.

Mike Madison (Anora), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, Shameless) and Bill Burr (The King of Staten Island) are also involved. Aaron Sorkin will once again write and direct the upcoming project, with filming scheduled to start around October 2025. The Social Reckoning will be based on a collection of articles from The Wall Street Journal, known as “The Facebook Files,” which were first published in 2021 and revealed hidden information about the widely used social media platform.

Released in 2010, The Social Network was both a critical and commercial hit, bringing in $224 million despite costing only $40 million to make. The film received numerous nominations, including those for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Eisenberg). It ultimately won awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. Since then, the movie has gained a dedicated fan base, but how accurately it portrays real events has been widely discussed.

Garfield Previously Praised Aaron Sorkin’s Work on The Social Network

It’s probably not shocking to Andrew Garfield that he won’t be returning for The Social Reckoning. He’s already discussed the possibility of future installments and his potential involvement. Garfield previously stated, “I think anything that Aaron does is going to be really, really powerful and interesting, and if he’s feeling drawn to a subject, you know it’s got some juice in it.” He also added, “I’d be excited [about a follow-up.]”

Even so, Garfield predicted that Eduardo wouldn’t appear in a follow-up to The Social Network. He explained, “I don’t think I’d be involved, as Eduardo seems to be enjoying life with his wealth in Singapore.”

The Social Reckoning will be released on Oct. 9. 2026.
