Paul McCartney honored the memory of John Lennon during his California concert on Friday by playing ‘Help’ – a classic Beatles song – for the first time in nearly 40 years.
The 83-year-old music legend, who co-wrote the song with John Lennon in 1965, performed several Beatles classics during his show. He hadn’t played ‘Help’ live since 1990.
Oh my gosh, you guys, Paul McCartney actually PERFORMED! It was a secret, one-night-only show at the Santa Barbara Bowl – can you believe it?! He was warming up for the big North American leg of his ‘Got Back’ tour that starts on Monday, but honestly, it felt like a dream just *seeing* him there. I still can’t process it!
The Beatles icon also played several of their own famous songs, like “Hey Jude,” “Let It Be,” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
In 1980, John Lennon was fatally shot outside his New York City home by a fan named Mark Chapman. He was just 40 years old.
After leaving the Beatles in 1969, the band’s official breakup became public knowledge in 1970 when Paul McCartney announced he was no longer collaborating with the group.

The musician’s disagreements over who owned the rights to the band’s older songs led to legal fights and strained relationships with his wife and a former collaborator.
In 2022, while performing at Spokane Arena in Washington, Paul McCartney showed documentary clips of his late bandmate during the concert.
He displayed a video of the late John Lennon while performing a moving rendition of “I’ve Got A Feeling” with his band, creating the effect of a duet.
A heartwarming photo captured the amazing scene: he was performing on stage while a large screen behind him displayed John Lennon singing and playing guitar.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been diving into the fascinating documentary *The Beatles: Get Back* on Disney+, which came out in November 2021. It’s a real behind-the-scenes look at how the band created their iconic 1970 album, *Let It Be*. It’s amazing to see the creative process unfold!
McCartney told the crowds: ‘Peter Jackson said, “I can pull John’s voice out if you’d like me to”.’
The actors who will play the Beatles in Sam Mendes’ new film about the band were revealed earlier this year. Four well-known stars have been cast as the iconic Fab Four.
Sony revealed the actors for its four upcoming Beatles films at CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas, ending months of rumors. All four movies are scheduled to come out in April 2028.

Paul Mescal, known for his role in *Gladiator II*, will portray Paul McCartney in an upcoming film about The Beatles. He’ll be joined by Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.
At a recent event at Caesar’s Palace, 59-year-old Mendes announced that all four films about The Beatles-collectively titled *The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event*-will be released in the same month. He made the announcement as he presented the four main actors to the audience.
Each movie will tell the story of a different band member. The director says Sony’s Tom Rothman called the series “the first movie experience you’ll want to watch all at once.”
Mendes revealed they weren’t creating just one Beatles movie, but a series of four. He hopes this project will offer a deeper understanding of the band.
Mendes said The Beatles profoundly impacted how he views music, and he’s been working on a film about them for years.
As a storyteller, I feel incredibly lucky to be bringing the story of what I truly believe is the greatest rock band ever to the screen. And honestly, I’m really excited to push boundaries and redefine what people expect from a moviegoing experience. That’s what I was aiming for when we started this project, back in 2024.
At Cinemacon, Sam explained that The Beatles’ story was too expansive to be told in a single movie, and he didn’t believe it would work as a TV show.
Sam went on to share that the four films will be released ‘in proximity’ with each other.
‘Frankly, we need big cinematic events to get people out of the house,’ the Skyfall frontman added.
He explained to the audience that they needed to find a way to retell this classic story for today’s viewers. He believes there’s still much more to discover within the story, and they’ve found a way to do just that.
The actors performed songs from The Beatles’ *Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band* and finished with a synchronized bow, mirroring the band’s signature move.
This is the first time The Beatles and their company, Apple Corps, have allowed a movie to be made using their complete life story and music.
The movies are being made by Sony Pictures and Sam’s Neal Street Productions company.
Mendes shared that he proposed a four-movie plan for the group to Sony executives Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler last year, and they were very impressed with his vision.
Earlier this year, the director of Skyfall told Deadline that when they presented the project in Los Angeles right before Christmas, the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Sony’s proposal was particularly impressive because Tom and Elizabeth were so enthusiastic about the project and dedicated to releasing these films in theaters with a fresh and engaging approach.

Sam won an Academy Award for directing the 1999 film *American Beauty*. He also directed the popular James Bond film *Skyfall* in 2012 and the acclaimed war movie *1917* in 2019.
Barry has become a major star recently, thanks to his performances in films like Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin.
Paul became well-known after starring in the BBC series Normal People, and his career has continued to rise. He recently secured the main role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming film, Gladiator II.
Dickinson charmed audiences with his role as Nicole Kidman’s young lover in Babygirl.
Quinn quickly became famous after playing Eddie Munson in the fourth season of Stranger Things.
The Beatles were a rock band from Liverpool, England, formed in 1960. The group included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
Widely considered the most influential band ever, they played a key role in shaping the 1960s counterculture and helped establish popular music as a respected art form.
The Beatles’ last commercial gig took place at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California.
