Be warned: this article reveals major plot details from the movie *One Battle After Another*. If you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to avoid reading further!
I’m a huge Paul Thomas Anderson fan, and his latest, *One Battle After Another*, is just incredible. Critics are raving about it, and for good reason! What really blew me away was how massive and detailed the world he created is. It’s inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s *Vineland*, but Anderson really takes it in his own direction, filling it with unforgettable characters and a powerful story about fighting for what’s right. When the movie ended, I didn’t feel like it was *over* – it felt like these people were still out there, living their lives, and I was left wondering what adventures awaited them next.
To find out what the future holds for their characters in *One Battle After Another*, TopMob’s Jeff McCobb went straight to the source: the actors themselves. He spoke with Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyona Taylor, and Chase Infiniti during a recent press event in Los Angeles.
Bob Is Getting Into Music While Sensei St. Carlos Gets Back To The Dojo
In the film *One Battle After Another*, Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters, Pat Calhoun and Bob Ferguson, form a powerful partnership with Benicio Del Toro’s Sensei St. Carlos. They work effectively together when Sean Penn’s Col. Steven J. Lockjaw searches for a French 75, hoping to conceal an interracial relationship that resulted in Chase Infiniti’s Charlene Calhoun/Willa Ferguson’s birth. The martial arts teacher offers crucial assistance, helping to compensate for the former revolutionary’s struggles with exhaustion and ineffectiveness. This leaves the audience wondering what happens to them next.
The movie concludes with Bob having a heartfelt moment with his daughter after reading a letter from her mother, and Sensei St. Carlos is arrested. However, Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro imagined a brighter future for both characters. They suggested Bob might pursue a career in music, and they also mentioned a deleted scene that revealed what happened to Sensei after his arrest.
- Leonardo DiCaprio: Where did our characters end up?
- Benicio Del Toro: You’ll be playing something, some band or something, right? You bought some stuff?
- Leonardo DiCaprio: Yeah, A Block Past Normal. I’ll go with the local band, play at the local pub.
- Benicio Del Toro: There was one scene. I think that was something that we shot like, for after. That [PTA] didn’t use. But I was back in the dojo teaching… I think I’ll be there too. Right. I’ll be back… I know some people in high places.
Bob doesn’t seem like he’d thrive returning to revolutionary work, so it’s good he’s focused on music instead. It’s also wonderful to know Sensei St. Carlos is still actively making a positive impact in multiple ways.
Deandra May Or May Not Be In Prison, But There’s No Closure Envisioned For Perfidia
Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro seemed hopeful about what could happen beyond the events in *One Battle After Another*. However, the conversation shifted when Regina Hall, Teyona Taylor, and Chase Infiniti joined – they weren’t as optimistic. Unlike the expectations for music and martial arts, the futures of Deandra and Perfidia Beverly Hills appear less promising.
Similar to how Sensei St. Carlos helps Bob in the movie, Regina Hall’s character, Deandra, strongly protects Willa when Colonel Lockjaw searches for her. However, Hall believes Deandra’s bravery might not lead to a happy ending, and she suggested during an interview that Deandra could end up imprisoned, despite Jeff’s attempts to convince her otherwise.
I have a terrible feeling about Deandra – I believe she’s been imprisoned, and I suspect it’s for a significant amount of time. It’s just a gut feeling, but doesn’t it seem likely? They say things happen down in Mexico, somewhere… and I’m just wandering around, lost in my own thoughts. Meanwhile, Willa has returned home, bravely continuing the fight. It’s strange, isn’t it? None of us really know where any of them are, do we?
What about Perfidia, though? She leaves the story of *One Battle After Another* relatively soon after betraying the French 75 by revealing others’ identities, escaping to Mexico. However, she hasn’t fully cut ties with her past, as shown by the letter she sends to her daughter. Even after fifteen years, she still seems to be searching for peace and a way to reconnect with her child.
- Teyana Taylor: Oh, I don’t think there’s any closure.
- Regina Hall: She’s done broke some man’s heart.
- Teyana Taylor: Probably so, because you know Perfidia is a heartbreaker. But I also think that per her letter, you know, I think she’s doing a lot of reflecting. I think there’s a lot of reflecting. I think she’s sorry. And I think that, you know, I think she’s just hoping for a day that is safe enough to get back to her baby.
Let’s be honest, the only character who truly gets a satisfying ending in *One Battle After Another* is the villainous Col. Lockjaw. He meets his end at the hands of the Christmas Adventurers Club, and frankly, my reaction was, “Good riddance!” It’s a clean resolution for a character who definitely deserved it.
Starring Alana Haim, Shayna McHayle, Wood Harris, and Tony Goldwyn, the new film *One Battle After Another* opened strong in theaters this weekend, topping the box office charts. We loved it and expect to write much more about it in the coming months – as we consider the best films of 2025 and follow the awards season (many believe Paul Thomas Anderson and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro deserve recognition).
