Leonardo DiCaprio can still draw audiences to movie theaters.
“One Battle After Another” topped the box office this weekend, earning $22.4 million in the U.S. and Canada. Worldwide, the film grossed $48.5 million during its opening weekend. Experts predicted an opening between $20 million and $25 million, with some forecasting as high as $30 million. The studio itself anticipated a $20 million domestic opening.
Paul Thomas Anderson, the acclaimed director and writer, brings us “One Battle After Another.” The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a former revolutionary who teams up with his old allies to save his daughter from a past foe. Featuring a cast including Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, and Regina Hall, the movie is inspired by a novel by Thomas Pynchon and cost $130 million to make.

People no longer browse movie listings at the theater itself. Now, theaters are finding new ways to attract customers.
Despite attracting attention from film enthusiasts in Hollywood, it was uncertain if “One Battle After Another” would appeal to a wider audience, as initial advertising didn’t clearly define its genre. Furthermore, serious, adult-focused movies haven’t been as successful in theaters since the pandemic began, largely because older moviegoers haven’t fully returned. This was a particular concern for fans of Leonardo DiCaprio, many of whom have followed his work since his breakout role in “Titanic.”
I’m so thrilled to see this film is getting the recognition it deserves! It’s earned an incredible 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and everyone’s already talking about how it might be an awards contender. It’s fantastic to see such a well-made movie getting this kind of positive attention.
Warner Bros. continues its winning streak at the box office with the success of “One Battle After Another.” This follows a string of hits beginning with “A Minecraft Movie” in April, which has earned $957 million worldwide. Other recent successes include films like “Sinners,” “Superman,” “Weapons,” and new entries in the “Conjuring” and “Final Destination” series. This is a significant comeback for the studio and its leaders, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, who faced pressure earlier this year due to previous films that didn’t perform as well.
Originally, “One Battle After Another” was considered a big gamble for De Luca and Abdy. However, the strong performance of their other films this year has taken some of the pressure off of it, according to Shawn Robbins, who leads movie analysis at Fandango and also founded Box Office Theory.
They’re in a good spot right now because the movie isn’t crucial to their success,” he explained. “’One Battle After Another’ is just an added bonus.”
“Gabby’s Dollhouse” came in second place at the box office this weekend, grossing $13.5 million. “Demon Slayer,” “The Conjuring: Last Rites” and “The Strangers: Chapter 2” rounded out the top five.
