The period drama *The Aftermath*, which stars Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, and Jason Clarke, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Based on Rhidian Brook’s 2014 novel and directed by James Kent, the series also features Martin Compston.
The film, first released in 2019, centers around a complex love triangle. It’s set in Hamburg, Germany, in 1945, shortly after the war. Rachael Morgan (played by Knightley) travels there and reconnects with her husband, Colonel Lewis Morgan (Clarke). But as they try to rebuild their relationship after a tragic loss-the death of their son-Rachael finds herself falling for architect Stefan Lubert (Skarsgård), leading to an affair that will change her life.
Martin Compston, famous for playing a key role in the series Line of Duty, joins the cast as Keith Burnham in a supporting role.

After it was released, *The Aftermath* earned a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning critics had a generally mixed reaction. The *Boston Globe* described it as both silly and surprisingly fun.
The *Chicago Reader* observed that Keira Knightley’s portrayal of the character is surprisingly more likable and passionate than in the book, whereas Matthew Macfadyen’s character feels flatter and almost like a stereotype.
Empire Magazine complimented *The Aftermath*, noting that while the story isn’t original, the strong performances from the actors make it captivating rather than predictable.
The *Daily Telegraph* also praised the film, saying it’s an enjoyable and unique love story thanks to its acting, strong depiction of the setting and period, and its poignant reminder that the end of a war doesn’t truly mean peace for everyone involved.
Keira Knightley explained to *British Vogue* why she was interested in the film. She said she’d worked on several World War II projects and watched many films about the war, but this was the first time she’d encountered a story set immediately *after* the conflict ended.
It’s hard to imagine starting over after something truly devastating. And it’s remarkable how people from that generation were able to see former enemies as people again. I hadn’t considered that before, but it’s an incredible achievement.
