Ryan Reynolds reveals shocking insult he hurled at Blake Lively over call from A-list celebrity

Ryan Reynolds recently shared a story about a disagreement he had with his wife, Blake Lively, regarding their work projects. He described a candid conversation they had behind the scenes.

The 48-year-old actor is currently traveling across the US to promote his new documentary, ‘John Candy: I Like Me,’ and get it shown in theaters nationwide.

He shared with the audience at the State Theatre New Jersey on September 25th that getting Bill Murray involved in his son Colin Hanks’ documentary was a real struggle, and it even caused some friction in his marriage.

Ryan, a producer for the movie, said it was so difficult to get an interview with Bill Murray, they could have made a whole separate documentary just about the attempt.

He finally managed to get her phone number through a mutual connection – a friend of a friend of a friend – and playfully remarked that her voicemail sounded like a message from a Greek shipping company.

Ryan Reynolds addressed the audience, saying he’s working on a documentary about John Candy and asked Bill if he’d be willing to share his memories and insights. Reynolds offered to meet with Bill and do whatever was needed to get his input.

The Deadpool star went on to say he left about ’40 messages.’

Okay, so Ryan was telling me this amazing story! He said he was heading to some super fancy gala – which he *never* does, honestly, he’s not really a tux kind of guy – and he’s with his wife, about to go inside, when his phone buzzes. He looks down, and get this… it’s a text from *Bill Murray*! He literally just yelled ‘Bill Murray!’ He was so shocked, I could just feel his excitement!

He lowered his voice, imitating how he’d whispered to Blake, and continued, ‘She said, “We have to go in!”‘

‘I’m like, “F**k you!” he revealed, spilling the derogatory insult he said to his wife.

It is unclear which gala Ryan was referring to and around what date the exchange took place.

The crowd burst into laughter as Ryan went on to describe his first phone call with Bill Murray, which ended with Murray saying he’d consider being in the documentary and would follow up later.

The actor said he’d left around forty messages, explaining he was really worried because they were quickly approaching the deadline to finish filming.

In a final message, he sent a video to the famous actor while the actor was relaxing at home. The actor explained that his daughter had climbed onto his head, and his son had begun to scream.

Ryan even had his two-year-old son ask Bill to consider making the documentary.

‘I said, “If you say no to a child like that, I don’t know what kind of monster you are.”

Bill responded almost immediately after receiving the video message, asking, “What do you need regarding John Candy?”

Ryan and Blake recently celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on September 9th. They are parents to four children: James, who is 10, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin, 2.

The documentary includes interviews with many of John Candy’s friends and colleagues, such as Bill, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Macaulay Culkin, Tom Hanks, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Conan O’Brien.

During a recent event called ‘Evening with Ryan Reynolds & Friends,’ Reynolds discussed the Deadpool movies and revealed that many scenes were inspired by films featuring John Candy, particularly *Planes, Trains and Automobiles*.

You know, I’ve heard Ryan Reynolds really wanted to include a joke honoring a late actor in one of the Deadpool movies, and get this – his wife, Blake Lively, was totally on board and encouraged him to fight for it! It just shows how much he values keeping that actor’s memory alive, and it’s sweet to see their support for each other’s passions.

‘My wife’s like, “The man asked him for one thing – give him that one thing!”‘ he said.

Ryan is a huge fan of John Hughes’ book, *The Canadian Mounted*, and is so committed to using it in his films that he personally covers a $5,000 fee each time. This is because the rights to the film *Planes, Trains and Automobiles* – where the book first appears – are owned by Paramount.

Ryan was joined on stage by Chris Candy, John Candy’s son, along with Steve Higgins from The Tonight Show and film professor Daniel Pasternack. He didn’t say anything about the legal issues between his wife and Justin Baldoni.

I was really glad to hear him talk about mental health. It’s something the new John Candy documentary, ‘I Like Me,’ covers too, and it’s going to be available on Amazon Prime Video starting October 10th. I’m definitely planning to watch it and learn more.

In December 2024, Blake, the wife of Ryan, filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, her co-star and the director of ‘It Ends With Us’. She alleged that Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, attempted to damage her reputation. Blake also stated she suffered significant emotional distress as a result of the alleged harassment.

He quickly filed a defamation and extortion lawsuit against her, but the case, which sought $400 million in damages, was dismissed in June 2025.

Okay, so it’s like, Blake actually *dropped* the part of her lawsuit where she claimed she was emotionally messed up. Her lawyer said she decided to do it on her own, which… honestly, I’m still processing. It’s just… a lot. I’ve been following this so closely and it’s weird she just let that part go. I need to know *why*!

A few days afterward, Justin and Wayfarer’s legal team requested Lively’s medical and mental health records in court, aiming to demonstrate she had suffered emotional distress. They also asked the judge to dismiss her emotional distress claims permanently, preventing her from bringing them up again in the future.

Since the emotional distress claims were dropped, the judge decided Blake doesn’t need to submit her medical records to the court.

Ryan has been helping Blake with his federal case, and the trial is set to begin in March 2026.
