BBC’s upcoming prison drama, *Waiting For The Out*, recently shared a first glimpse, with its release planned for next year. If you’re interested in learning about this promising and insightful new series, you’ve come to the right place.
The new series is inspired by Andy West’s memoir, *The Life Inside*, and features Josh Finan, known for his role in *The Responder*, as Dan, a philosopher who leads a class for inmates.
The show centers around Dan, who hosts weekly conversations exploring concepts like power, liberty, and chance – but viewed from the unique perspective of incarcerated individuals. The show also promises to spark romance and build suspense.

Dan’s work leads him to confront painful memories of his childhood, including an abusive father and a difficult relationship with his brother. Despite living a life separate from his family, he experiences a personal struggle that puts his own future at risk.
The BBC has shared initial photos from its upcoming six-episode series, adapted by Dennis Kelly, Levi David Addai, and Ric Renton. The images show Finan as Dan, while he’s running his workshop.

Alongside Finan, the drama features Francis Lovehall, Josef Altin, Steven Meo, Ric Renton, Tom Moutchi, Sule Rimi, and Charlie Rix. They all play inmates taking part in Dan’s class.
The series features a talented ensemble cast including Alex Ferns, Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo, Nima Taleghani, Sophia Brown, Samantha Spiro, Neal Barry, Jude Mack, Gerard Kearns, Stephen Wight, and Phil Daniels. Jeanette Nordahl and Ben Palmer directed the project.
It’s common for men in Andy West’s family to be incarcerated, but Andy is unique – he willingly chose to go to prison, as Kelly explained when the project was announced in May (according to the BBC).
The book is hilarious, thoughtful, and beautifully written-it’s also surprisingly emotional and unlike anything you might anticipate. We really aimed to capture that same feeling in the series. Whether we’ve managed to do it is another question, but we definitely gave it our best shot.

Lindsey Salt, Director of BBC Drama, praised “Waiting For The Out” as a fresh and insightful exploration of what it means to be a man, focusing on themes of forgiveness and finding oneself, all from a highly respected British author.
West, an executive producer on the series, expressed gratitude to the team who adapted *The Life Inside*. He praised their ability to tell the book’s stories with both creativity and a strong sense of morality.
West’s 2022 memoir received widespread praise from both critics and readers. Author Geoff Dyer called it “tense and intimate,” and comedian Lenny Henry described it as “enriching, sobering, and at times heartrending.”
Waiting For The Out will premiere in 2026.
