Sylvester Stallone Reacts To Noah Centineo Playing Young Rambo, And Weighs In On How The Prequel Could Be ‘Great’

It seems both of Sylvester Stallone’s famous movie series are continuing without him. He’s retired from playing Rocky Balboa, but Michael B. Jordan is set to take over the role. Stallone also believes the *Rambo* series will go on without him, and he actually thinks that’s a positive thing.

A prequel to the *Rambo* movies is in the works, and Noah Centineo is set to star as a young John Rambo in a story set during the Vietnam War. Sylvester Stallone recently told ET that he isn’t very familiar with Centineo’s work, but he believes a prequel could be a good idea. Stallone also mentioned…

I don’t know much about this person, but I anticipate a significant challenge. I actually had an idea that might help, and I think things could go really well if everything falls into place.

Stallone once had an idea for a Rambo prequel, but this new project is different. He’s always pictured what a young John Rambo would be like and believes a story about a talented young man caught in the Vietnam War would be very engaging. As he explained…

I always pictured Rambo as a real all-star – a star athlete and a straight-A student, the kind of guy destined to be valedictorian. But the war completely changed him, leaving him with PTSD and turning him into someone capable of immense destruction. I was interested in showing how he went from eagerly anticipating war – thinking it would be quick and exciting – to becoming the person he was after experiencing it.

The *Rambo* films are generally typical action stories about a lone hero, but the original, *First Blood*, presented John Rambo as a Vietnam veteran struggling with PTSD. He unexpectedly clashes with a prejudiced sheriff, leading to a different kind of conflict in the Pacific Northwest. Because the first movie so clearly shows the impact of Rambo’s wartime trauma, any earlier story would need to depict those experiences and explain how they shaped him into the character we know.

The last Rambo film, *Rambo: Last Blood*, came out in 2019, and even though the title suggests it would be the final installment, it didn’t completely rule out future movies. While *Last Blood* wasn’t well-received by critics or a big hit with audiences, a prequel could be a fresh start for the franchise, using its established name to explore a new story.

The Rambo movies briefly mention his experiences in Vietnam. Stallone wants a prequel to fully explore what he describes as the intense and chaotic nature of Rambo’s time there, explaining…

I hope the new film shows the chaos of what happened in Saigon. Apocalypse Now hinted at it, and if they really focus on that intensity, it could be fantastic.

Noah Centineo is getting into incredible physical shape for his role in the upcoming *Street Fighter* movie, and he’s already looking like he could step into the world of *Rambo*. While it’s not yet known when filming for the *Rambo* prequel will begin, Sylvester Stallone will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the project, even if he isn’t directly involved.
