- Builder Apprentice eventually surpasses Goblin Builder, but timing depends on monthly gem income.
- Low gem earners in Clash of Clans benefit more from Goblin Builder in the short term.
- Higher gem income speeds up Builder Apprentice’s break-even, making it the stronger long-term choice.
Clash of Clans players frequently discuss the best way to use gems to speed up their village. Should they get the Builder Apprentice, or hire the Goblin Builder? Both options reduce building and upgrade times, but the key is figuring out which one offers a better advantage over time.
A Reddit user, u/EmphasisConfident478, shared a helpful explanation that clarifies this confusing situation. Let’s take a closer look at the details.
Comparing the Builder Apprentice and Goblin Builder in Clash of Clans
The Builder Apprentice, unlocked at Town Hall 10, helps your builders speed up building and upgrading. As you improve his level, he becomes more effective, offering a lasting benefit. He starts by working at 1x speed and can be upgraded to 8x, with the upgrade cost ranging from 500 to 1000 resources.
The Goblin Builder is a special troop unlocked during “Work for Hire” events. These events become available at Town Hall 7 and above, once you’ve constructed all five Builder Huts. For 40 gems per day, the Goblin Builder can start additional upgrades even when your regular builders are occupied, speeding up your progress.
How rewarding are the Builder Apprentice and Goblin Builder for gems you spend in Clash of Clans
The Goblin Builder initially appears more helpful because it immediately cuts down on building time. However, when you look at the long-term benefits, the Builder Apprentice actually becomes more efficient. Even with a gem income of around 500 to 1,500 per month, the Apprentice will eventually outperform the Goblin Builder.
Looking at how much money each builder makes, the difference between the Builder Apprentice and the Goblin Builder becomes apparent. If you earn around 500 gems each month, the Goblin Builder is a better deal initially, but the Builder Apprentice becomes more valuable after roughly 16 months (480 days).

If you earn 1,000 gems each month, you’ll reach the point where the Builder Apprentice pays for itself in about 301 days. But if you earn 1,500 gems per month, it only takes 182 days. Essentially, the more gems you earn consistently, the quicker the Builder Apprentice becomes the better option.
It may take a little while to see the benefits, but once they become apparent, the Builder Apprentice will consistently save you money in the long run.
If you only gather a small number of gems each month, the Goblin Builder will help you upgrade things faster at first. However, if you consistently collect gems, it’s better to invest in the Builder Apprentice early on – you’ll see a return on your investment sooner and continue to save time as you upgrade further.
