With the movie *Wicked: For Good* nearing its 2025 release, more information is being revealed about how the film will explore and reimagine the classic story of *The Wizard of Oz*. Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda the Good, recently shared that her version of the character is a bit more nuanced and surprisingly humorous. It seems even in the magical land of Oz, striving for perfection isn’t always easy.
Ariana Grande recently told Empire magazine that her character, Glinda, isn’t immediately welcoming to Dorothy Gale when she arrives from Kansas. She elaborated on this dynamic in the interview.
I find Glinda’s subtle dismissiveness towards Dorothy really interesting. It’s clear Glinda is busy and doesn’t want to be bothered, and she easily could have directed Dorothy to the Emerald City. The fact that she didn’t feels a bit passive-aggressive! I played up that attitude in my portrayal of Glinda, imagining her rolling her eyes whenever Dorothy needed help.
This delicate color gives a fresh spin to the character of Glinda, who is typically portrayed as purely glamorous and optimistic. However, Ariana Grande’s interpretation, similar to the story of *Wicked* itself, is more complex and playfully mischievous. It’s less about a flawless fairy godmother and more about a powerful publicist in Oz attempting to manage chaos as a naive young woman arrives from Kansas seeking guidance.

Jon M. Chu’s *Wicked: For Good* continues the story immediately after *Wicked: Part One* (available now on Prime Video), bringing it closer to the classic *Wizard of Oz* tale. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, and this installment features new songs written by the original Broadway composer, Stephen Schwartz. The titles of these two new songs were recently announced, and both stars have begun sharing hints about how their characters will develop.
It’s still unknown how Dorothy will be depicted in the upcoming movie, but the titles of the new songs – “Girl In The Bubble” and “No Place Like Home” – may give us some clues. Ariana Grande, who has always loved *Wicked*, recently mentioned that her character, Glinda, truly earns her solo performance. Although she performs “I’m Not That Girl” in the stage version, that song focuses more on her romantic feelings for Fiyero than on her own development. Will we see Glinda go from being initially skeptical of Dorothy to helping her find her way home, fully embracing her role as The Good Witch? We’ll have to wait and see.
Hearing what the actress who plays Elphaba thinks about the relationship between Glinda and Dorothy has definitely made me even more excited to see where the *Wicked* movie is going. With each new piece of information, the decision to tell the story in two parts seems more and more like the right one.
Although Dorothy isn’t the main character in this new movie, she seems crucial to Glinda’s story, and I’m really excited about that! Until the film comes out on November 21st, you can rewatch the trailer for *Wicked: For Good* to hold you over.
