We did a couple of days later, and honestly, it was a surprisingly great fantasy film – one of the best I’ve seen in a long time!

Okay, let me tell you about this movie. It really throws everything at you – action, fantasy, a bit of romance, and this incredibly cool, weird weapon called a Glaive. Plus, it’s fun to see young Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane in early roles. But honestly, what *really* stuck with me wasn’t any of that. It was the cyclops! This one-eyed helper who joins the heroes on their quest to rescue a princess from a truly nasty villain. I need to unpack that, seriously.

Krull Is A Fantastic Movie, And I’m Shocked I Went So Long Without Seeing It

I can’t believe it took me 37 years to discover *Krull*! It’s exactly the kind of movie I love. While it’s not the best film of the 80s, it’s a surprisingly good movie, despite being a box office failure when it came out in 1983. I was immediately drawn in, even after the odd opening space scene that felt a bit tacked on, maybe to compete with *Return of the Jedi*. I was eager to see how Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) and his companions would rescue his bride and save the world from the Beast, a monster who travels through space.

But That Cyclops Seriously Creeped Me Out

I remember when the Cyclops, Rell (played by Bernard Bresslaw), first appeared in the movie *Krull*. My friends and I actually jumped! It was so strange how the creature just stood there and blinked – the old animatronic effects were really unsettling. Honestly, the character Ergo (David Battley) perfectly captured how we all felt, constantly running away from this huge, mostly silent giant at the beginning of the film.

As a movie buff, I’ve noticed some older films just don’t *need* to be upgraded to HD or 4K – they actually look better with the charming grain of VHS on an old tube TV. This movie is a perfect example! The special effects, specifically how they created the Cyclops, haven’t aged well and honestly look a little unsettling when you see *every* detail in high definition.

Rell Is One Of The Movie’s Best Characters, But I Couldn’t Stop Staring At… You Know

Let me be clear: Rell is a fantastic character in *Krull*, and his death is one of the most emotionally impactful moments in the film – it’s similar to the famous “Hold the Door” scene from *Game of Thrones*. Without his bravery and strength, Colwyn and the other heroes wouldn’t have stood a chance.

I couldn’t help but fixate on Rell’s incredibly large eye – the one with the robotic eyelid that moved strangely slowly. I kept trying to look away, but it was impossible. It was like a bizarre, captivating disaster I couldn’t stop watching, and it felt like the eye was staring right through me every time he appeared on screen.
