A recent rumor from someone working in the film industry suggests that a fifth *Shrek* movie is in the works and could bring back a well-known villain. The news quickly gained traction online, leading fans to wonder if the sequel will have a surprising turn of events.
Farquaad rumored to return in Shrek 5’s twisted plot
A new rumor suggests that a fifth Shrek movie is in the works and will surprisingly bring back the character Lord Farquaad.
A popular Disney insider account, MyTimeToShineHello, recently shared a potential plot point for *Shrek 5*: apparently, Shrek and his friends will find themselves stuck in the real world and stumble upon an amusement park themed around him, run by the villain from the first movie, Lord Farquaad. This idea has been circulating among fans for years, as many have wondered how DreamWorks might bring back Farquaad, who was originally voiced by John Lithgow and defeated (and eaten!) in the original *Shrek*.
DreamWorks has scheduled the release of Shrek 5 for June 30, 2027, after pushing back the date from earlier in 2026. This will be the longest wait between Shrek movies – 17 years after the last film, ‘Shrek Forever After,’ came out in 2010. Walt Dohrn, Conrad Vernon, and Brad Ableson are directing, with a script by Michael McCullers. Recording for the characters started in 2024, bringing back original stars Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy. New to the cast is Zendaya, who will voice Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.
Rumors of Lord Farquaad returning have sparked conversations among fans about possible revivals of the character. He’s appeared briefly before, in the 2003 short film ‘The Ghost of Lord Farquaad’ and as part of the ‘Shrek 4-D’ ride at Universal Studios.
Fans have long discussed how Lord Farquaad might return in the *Shrek* universe – through magic, being brought back to life, or even as a ghost. One Reddit user pointed out he already appeared as a ghost at the end of the first movie. John Lithgow, who voiced Farquaad, recently said he’d eagerly return to the role if asked, jokingly adding that it’s hard to come back after being eaten by a dragon (according to People magazine).
Eddie Murphy recently announced that a spin-off movie focusing on his character, Donkey, is in the works, coinciding with the fifth Shrek film. While there’s no set release date or information about how the movie will be made, DreamWorks hasn’t denied rumors about Lord Farquaad potentially appearing, suggesting the Shrek universe is continuing to grow.
