Bollywood actor Zubeen Garg passed away at the age of 52 while scuba diving in Bukit Merah, Singapore, last Friday. It was a tragic accident.
A 52-year-old man from India had trouble breathing and received CPR at the scene. He was quickly taken to Singapore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit around 2:30 PM India Standard Time.
Zubeen was supposed to perform at the Northeast India Festival in Suntec City last Saturday, but the festival director, Shaymkanu Mahanta, received a last-minute call from the singer’s manager, causing a change of plans.
Mahanta stated that they discovered a small group from the local Assamese community had recently taken him on a yacht trip, something they weren’t aware of beforehand.
‘In light of this tragedy, we are cancelling the event.’
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, stated in a press conference on Sunday that the death certificate for Garg (born Borthakur) indicates he died by drowning, though the full post-mortem report is still being completed, according to the Times of India.

Oh my gosh, you wouldn’t BELIEVE the scene at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday! It was absolutely incredible – thousands of us, ALL of us fans, just completely surrounded the place, all wanting to show our love and respect for the amazing Joddha actor. It was honestly breathtaking to be part of such a huge outpouring of affection for him!
Sarma announced that Zubeen will be buried on Tuesday after the official mourning period ends. A memorial will also be constructed on a 10-bigha plot of land in Hatimura, Kamarkuchi Village.
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of a dear friend. He leaves behind his loving wife, Garima Saikia Garg, a talented costume designer, and their wonderful son, Gautam. My thoughts are with them both during this difficult time.
Oh my god, it was heartbreaking! I saw this video online – ANI posted it, and it just destroyed me. It showed his wife, completely devastated, just *clutching* the sides of his coffin – the clear one, so you could still *see* him. It was the most awful, beautiful, and tragic thing I’ve ever witnessed. I can’t stop replaying it in my head.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his shock and sadness over the sudden passing of Zubeen, sharing his condolences on Twitter.
‘Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg,’ Modi tweeted on X last Friday.
He left behind a wonderful legacy of music that touched the lives of many. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and all those who loved him. May he rest in peace.
Rahul Gandhi, the Chief Minister of Assam, also expressed his sadness about Garg’s passing, describing it as a ‘terrible tragedy’.
‘His voice defined a generation, and his talent was truly unmatched,’ Gandhi tweeted.
Despite facing great hardship, he transformed Assamese music. His determination and bravery will be remembered always, and he will remain in our memories forever.

The jewel of Assam was only 19 when he released his debut studio album Anamika in 1992.
As a lifestyle expert, I always say it’s amazing how one song can change everything! For Zubeen, that song was ‘Ya Ali.’ It really put him on the map in Bollywood when it was featured in Anurag Basu’s film, ‘Gangster: A Love Story’ back in 2006. It was a total breakthrough moment for him!
Garg was a remarkably versatile musician, fluent in over 40 languages and proficient in playing 12 different instruments, such as the drums, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, keyboard, and tabla.
The founder of the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation reportedly recorded more than 38,000 songs throughout their four-decade career.
Zubeen, a popular artist with an average of 2.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, has two new movies coming out: Homework and Roi Roi Binale.
