Fans of DC Comics are thrilled to have seen Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the Green Lantern, in early footage. Filming for the new HBO Max series *Lanterns* has finished – it took place from February to June of this year and is now in post-production. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the show and Pierre’s portrayal of the famous hero.
A first look at the upcoming DC series *Lanterns* has appeared online, exciting fans with a peek behind the scenes. The photo, taken on set, features Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry. Some believe Sheriff Kerry might become romantically involved with Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler.

Although it’s not a formal trailer, this footage offers the first glimpse of the show’s characters and hints at how the story will blend a realistic Earth setting with the larger, galactic world of the Green Lanterns.
Upon closer inspection, John Stewart is wearing everyday clothes, much like he and Hal Jordan were dressed in their initial appearance back in February 2025.

Sheriff Kerry seems to be talking to John, possibly while both are at the police station. It looks less like a formal interrogation and more like a casual discussion.

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, explained that the upcoming show will center around the story of John Stewart. This marks the first time the character will be the main focus of a live-action DC production.

Created by Chris Mundy, who also made *Ozark*, the new HBO series centers on Stewart and Jordan as they look into a series of unusual murders in the American Midwest. Their investigation could create conflict between local law enforcement, such as the police in Kerry, and a galactic organization that keeps the peace.

The cast of *Lanterns* is incredibly strong, bringing back Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and introducing Ulrich Thomsen as the villain Sinestro. Laura Linney will also appear in a currently secret role. Joining them are Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, Sherman Augustus, Paul Ben-Victor, and Chris Coy.
The new image offers a promising sneak peek, but doesn’t tell us when we can actually watch the project. We know *Lanterns* will stream on HBO Max in 2026, but it’s still unknown if it will come out before or after the *Supergirl* movie, which is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
When Will the Lanterns Trailer Release?
Fans of DC and Green Lantern might have to wait a few more months for the first official trailer for HBO’s *Lanterns* series.
The first chance to see what’s next might be immediately after *Peacemaker* Season 2 finishes. The season finale is scheduled to air on October 9, 2025, which also happens to be the first day of New York Comic-Con.
James Gunn shared exciting news about the DC Universe at NYCC 2024, revealing the trailer for Creature Commandos and hinting at upcoming projects like Lanterns, which is expected to arrive sooner than previously thought.
If James Gunn attends New York Comic Con in 2025, it would be a great opportunity for DC Studios to share a first look at the new show. Otherwise, the first full trailer might not be released until 2026, nearer the time the show actually airs.
