“Charming” British drama that “embraces you like a warm sweater” lands new UK streaming home

The feel-good British movie *Fisherman’s Friends* is back on Channel 4’s streaming service! It was taken off the platform a little over a month ago, but now you can watch it there again.

This movie is inspired by a true story about a group of fishermen from Cornwall who unexpectedly landed a record deal. What started as a joke quickly turned into something real, even though the down-to-earth fishermen and their glamorous manager were quite different. They overcame their challenges and, to everyone’s surprise, released a sea shanty album that climbed into the top 10 charts.

The movie boasts a talented British ensemble cast, with performances from Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Dave Johns, Sam Swainsbury, and Tuppence Middleton.

Like most films and shows on Channel 4, *Fisherman’s Friends* is only available to stream for a limited time – currently around 25 days. But don’t worry too much if it disappears, as Channel 4 has brought it back several times since its first showing, so it likely won’t be gone for long.

Although many Channel 4 viewers seem to love *Fisherman’s Friends*, initial reviews from critics were more mixed. The film currently has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 58 reviews.

According to a review in *The Guardian*, this charming and kindhearted comedy is particularly enjoyable thanks to the warm and engaging performances from its cast, including Daniel Mays and Tuppence Middleton.

On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Kermode & Mayo show, Mark Kermode described the film as comforting and cozy, like a warm sweater. This feeling was similarly expressed by the LAist FilmWeek podcast, which compared the film to a familiar, comforting old blanket.

As fellow film critic Susan Granger put it, if you liked movies like *The Full Monty* and *Calendar Girls*, you’ll probably enjoy *Fisherman’s Friends* – it’s a heartwarming and funny British romantic comedy with a surprisingly emotional impact.

In 2022, a second *Fisherman’s Friends* movie, called *Fisherman’s Friends: One and All*, came out. Most of the original actors returned, and the writing team of Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard were back as well.

The story picks up nearly a year later, and follows the main characters as they deal with the challenges and excitement of their rising fame while getting ready for their major performance at the Glastonbury festival in 2011.

Digital Spy praised the sequel as a humorous and touching revival of the beloved, long-running buoy band.

You can currently watch Fisherman’s Friends on the Channel 4 app, but the second film, Fisherman’s Friends: One and All, isn’t available there right now.

The new edition of Living Legends is here! Buy Gaga in newsagents or online, priced at just £8.99.
